Percentages in Barret's Chapel history

Introduction

Looking at people from the community that have passed at all different times, what can we learn from them?

Examining their birth dates, death dates, and calculating ages of graduation and other events for their lifetimes, what can we learn?

Establishing percentages and pie charts with the information, what can we determine about these people and how can that information help us now?

We will be examining public information websites and exploring other websites to find out the information needed for this project.

Task

Set up and present all information in a professional PowerPoint Presentation.

Read about Barret's Chapel history to create a timeline of the school.

Research and create a timeline of historically significant events happening from 1800 to current day.

Research your list of Memorials (given by Ms. Tucker) for Oak Springs Cemetery and record data on the fact sheet provided by Ms. Tucker.

Use the information gathered in the memorials and Barret's Chapel history to add information into one timeline on the presentation.

Using your prior knowledge, determine ages for relevant historical events and year of graduation (using 18 as age for graduation).

Examine the data for the timeline and create at least 2 pie charts using the data from the timelines (i.e., graduation years, death years, who was alive for a significant historical event, etc).

Write at least a paragraph closing slide that includes your thoughts of what you learned from studying people in our school's community history and how this new knowledge can help you and others reach Shelby County School's Destination 2025.

Process

1. Read:

The History of Barret’s Chapel School

Barret's Chapel School - SCS·Friday, October 4, 2019·

Immediately following the Civil War and adoption of the 13th Amendment, most states of the former Confederacy adopted Black Codes. The majority of states and local communities passed “Jim Crow” laws that mandated “separate but equal” status for African Americans. The most important Jim Crow laws required that public schools, public facilities, e.g., water fountains, toilets, and public transportation, like trains and buses, have separate facilities for whites and blacks. These laws meant that black people were legally required to attend separate schools and churches

In the late 1870s, residents of the area petitioned Henry Thomas, Director of Shelby County Schools, for a local school to accommodate the African-American children in the community. Jane Haynes donated land just northeast from current school location and the new school was named Hayes Grove School. It was the first school in Shelby County to have an eighth-grade graduation exercise for African-American children.

In the 1920s, the community petitioned J.H. Barret for better buildings and more contributions to the school. In 1922, the current land was purchased and an eight-room building with an auditorium was built for 12 grades. The first senior class graduated in 1929. The school's name was then changed to Barret's Chapel. A fire destroyed much of the school in the spring of 1960 so a new cafeteria, gym and elementary buildings were built and completed in 1961. After the desegregation of schools, the last senior class graduated from Barret's Chapel in 1971. The school was returned to a K-8 program.

2. Research people on your list according to the website:

                                  www.findagrave.com

Look up Oak Springs Cemetery and then look at the Memorials (214 entered) is hyperlinked to the list of all the people listed for the cemetery.

Fill in data sheet with information found on website and your math calculations.

3. Research historically significant events on the website:

                                  www.infoplease.com/history/us/us-history-timeline

Create a timeline from 1800 to 2025 with six headers (five from website and 2025 header from step below). Timeline must include each person given on list and any important facts concerning their life in relation to history events and BCS history. Include your information on timeline (birthdate, graduation, and any other important dates concerning history that you have been alive for).

4. Research the Shelby County School's "Destination 2025" from the website:

                                 www.scsk12.org/2025/

5. Create a PowerPoint to present all the information with at least:

Opening slide (your name, name of project, Honor's 6th Grade Math Project, and a graphic)

Slide for each person (including yourself)

Data slide with data from worksheet (creatively set up)

       Timeline slide (be creative)

Closing slide (How does learning about people from the community's history help me want to succeed and reach my graduation goals?)                                   *** Include details concerning SCS Destination 2025

6. Email to teacher via her email address and turn in any created "rough draft" papers.
