Introduction
States of Matter
VA SOL 5.4 a and b: Develop a model to describe that matter is made of particles too small to be seen.
Your goal is to investigate and understand that matter is anything that has mass and takes up space; and occurs as a solid, liquid, or gas.
Key concepts include a) distinguishing properties of each phase of matter; b) the effect of temperature on the phases of matter;
Task
Dear Students,
Your job is to research the different states of matter using your textbook and the internet.
Be sure to answer the following Essential Questions:
1. What are the three states of matter?
2. Are the particles that make up matter too small to be seen?
3. Does matter continue to exist even when it changes form?
-
Once you have all of your research done, you will develop a model that describes that matter is made of particles.
-
Create a booklet that describes each state of matter and answers the questions above.
Process
1. Watch the video about the different states of matter
What is Matter?
Particles of Your World
2. Explore each of the different states of matter
Solids Liquids Gases
3. Now that you have explored and learned about each state of matter, you would develop a model that describes and shows each state of matter. You may use modeling clay, paper, glue sticks, markers, ect (use the clay sparingly so that we have it for other projects).
4. You will also create a booklet that has the following:
-
Title
-
Solid Page
-
Liquid Page
-
Gas Page
-
Explains each state of matter
-
Includes Pictures or Visuals of each state of matter
-
Done neatly
-
Explanations are clear and concise
- Answer these questions in complete sentences as this will count towards a writing grade:
1. What are the three states of matter?
2. Are the particles that make up matter too small to be seen?
3. Does matter continue to exist even when it changes form?
Evaluation
Play the following activity and screenshot your final score. You may play it more than once as your score will be recorded for a test grade.

Conclusion
You have learned about all of the different states of matter. You have discovered that many substances can change. The state of matter can change from one state to another. Your research, model, and booklet should have given you a good idea of how matter continues to exist when changing forms, and what each state of matter looks like compared to each other.
