Process

Employee Paid Time Off (PTO) can come in a variety of different packages offered by an employer.

  - Sick leave - Accumulated time (typically 10 days/year) that an employee can miss work due to medical or family medical reasons, and still be compensated.  This would typically cover time needed for being sick, a funeral, or time to take care of a family member.

  - Vacation leave - The amount of time varies by the employer, the type of work you perform, and the amount of time you have been employed with that company.  For example, teachers typically only get two vacation days per year.  However, they have time off in the summer to supplement the rest of the year.  In the private sector, it is common for an employer to offer anywhere from two - four weeks of vacation time.  Some employers allow their employees to roll-over their unused PTO allowing them accumulate mass amounts of personal time.  Others require you to work for certain length of time before you qualify for PTO.

Training

Some employers offer on the job training, or have incentives to help support you going back to school to get additional training.  This typically comes with agreements that you will work for this company for so many years, or face pay-back penalties for not fulfilling your obligations that the company invested in you.

Many careers in the trades such as electricians, HVac, automotive technicians, ect, will train you on the job through an apprenticeship.  After a certain length of employment, they will send you back to school to get certifications or licenses.  These will help advance you on a salary schedule, and make you more employable.
