Introduction
Have you ever measured how far you can walk in 15 minutes? Have you wondered how fast you walk in kilometers per hour? Begin exploring this activity to find out.
You can find unknown information about real-world situations by using given information to find rates, and then setting up and solving proportions.
Task
You will:
- review what is a ratio.
- calculate unit rates from rates.
- represent constant rates of change given a table, verbal description, equation, or graph.
- determine constant of proportionality in real-world situations.
Process
For Unit Rate:
- Watch the following video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RQ2nYUBVvqI
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RQ2nYUBVvqI
Print and solve the activity 1, called by the name Unit Rate_AB, given at https://187de45e-a-62cb3a1a-s-sites.googlegroups.com/site/shsmath6grade/activities/Unit%20Rate_AB.pdf on your notebook.
-
Now, it is time for an virtual experiment. Visit https://phet.colorado.edu/sims/html/unit-rates/latest/unit-rates_en.html and choose Race Lab.
-
Beside the number line, there is a box with the title Rate 1. Set in miles 40, and in hours 2.
-
Below the number line there is a red car and a white-black colored flag. Move the flag in order to change the distance you want the car to go across.
-
Copy the following table on your notebook. Fill in it, changing the distances according to the given values, and write the time the car needed to go from the green to the white-black squared flag.
-
Distance (miles)
Time (hours)
20
40
60
80
100
120
140
- For each Distance and Time result, how many miles did it take per hour? Write the process on yout notebook.
- Now, let´s graph. Watch the following video, especifically, from the minute 1: 21. http://www.mathantics.com/section/lesson-video/graphing-on-the-coordinate-plane
- Make a graph on a coordinate-plane, where the x-axis will be the Time (hours) got from the table, and the y-axis will be the Distance (miles). Give the graph on milimetrical paper.
Evaluation
The grading process will be in the following way:
- Activity 1, 30%
- Filling the table, 10%
- Finding the distance per hour from the table, 30%
- Plotting Distance-Time on the coordinate plane on milimetrical paper, 30%
Give the Distance-Time graph to your teacher on May 31st.
