Gaffney's Grade 6 Flight Webquest

Introduction

There are thousands of airplanes flying around our world daily.

Did you ever stop to wonder where flight all started and how a plane can actually get up off the ground in the first place?

Task

Your task for this Webquest will be to complete the FLIGHT WORKBOOK.  The activities will cover the forces of flight, the parts of an aircraft, birds in flight and a quick look at the history of flight in Canada.

Unless labelling, answer in complete sentences.

Hand in your FLIGHT WORKBOOK when the webquest is finished.

You will have 3 classes to start and finish your task – be sure to use your time wisely.

At the end of your webquest you’ll be evaluated on your answers and how well you worked in class.

Process

The four forces Affecting Flight

1.  Read here about the four forces affecting flight.

Drag: The air resistance that tends to slow the forward movement of an airplane.

Weight: A force that acts on the plane to pull it back to earth.

Lift: The upward force that is created by the movement of air above and below a wing. Air flows faster above the wing and slower below the wing, creating a difference in pressure that tends to keep an airplane flying.

Thrust: The force that moves a plane forward through the air. Thrust is created by a propeller or a jet engine.
