Engineering Process

Introduction

Hello Engineers!

Before we can begin building and designing our engineering projects, we must learn the process which all engineers must follow to achieve success in their ideas and designs.

You will learn how to clearly define a problem, how to do background research and identify constraints, the planning process, how to build and test a prototype, and how to evaluate and improve on your design through iteration

Good Luck!

Task

Task 1: Watch the following crash course kids video on the engineering process:

Video

Task 2:

Take the quiz below to see if you are ready to start a project:

1) What is the very first step in the engineering process? Why is it important?

2)Why is doing background research important before starting to plan a solution?

3) Name 3 types of constraints and describe why they could be a constraints

3) What are the benefits of planning your idea before building?

4)  What is the name of your very first model?

5) When evaluating your design, what are the two most important things to look for? Why is each important?

6) Iteration is what three steps repeated over and over? What would be the desired result of iteration process?

Evaluation

If you have successfully answered those questions you are now ready to start a project in class.

Conclusion

Understanding and being  able to follow the engineering process will be critical throughout the year,  as we will be designing and building projects related to the different concepts we learn in science.

The following WebQuest was designed for my class to learn about the engineering process. Prior to beginning their engineering and design projects they must possess the background knowledge to complete the assignment.

This WebQuest and engineering project aligns with the following  NGSS standards:

3-5-ETS1-1. Define a simple design problem reflecting a need or a want that includes specified criteria for success and

constraints on materials, time, or cost.

3-5-ETS1-2. Generate and compare multiple possible solutions to a problem based on how well each is likely to meet the

criteria and constraints of the problem.

3-5-ETS1-3. Plan and carry out fair tests in which variables are controlled and failure points are considered to identify

aspects of a model or prototype that can be improved.
