A Journey Through the Digestive System

Introduction

WELCOME BIOLOGISTS!

The human body is an extraordinary system made up of multiple interacting systems, such as the digestive system, circulatory system, reparatory system, etc. These systems are made up of groups of cells that work together to form tissues and organs that are specialized for particular body functions. Today, we are going to be learning all about the DIGESTIVE SYSTEM, which is specially designed for taking in nutrients, absorbing and using the nutrients we ingest, and eliminating waste. The digestive system is SO important because our bodies need the nutrients from the food and water we eat and drink in order to work properly and stay healthy.

Throughout this web quest, you will be learning all about:

  • The digestive system's 6 tasks
  • The 8 main parts of the digestive system
  • How each part of the digestive functions

You will complete each task below by watching a video, reading an article, playing interactive games, and taking an online quiz.

Have fun!

NGSS Standard LS1-3:

MS-LS1-3. Use argument supported by evidence for how the body is a system of interacting subsystems composed of groups of cells. [Clarification Statement: Emphasis is on the conceptual understanding that cells form tissues and tissues form organs specialized for particular body functions. Examples could include the interaction of subsystems within a system and the normal functioning of those systems.] [Assessment Boundary: Assessment does not include the mechanism of one body system independent of others. Assessment is limited to the circulatory, excretory, digestive, respiratory, muscular, and nervous systems.

Task

Task 1)

For your first task, you will be introduced to just how remarkable the human digestive system is. Please watch the video posted below about the different parts of the digestive system and how each of these parts function. Remember to take notes while you are watching, as you will be quizzed on the information later on in the web quest.

Task 2)

For your second task, you will continue to learn about the digestive system by reading and taking notes on the article attached below. This article provides a quick anatomy lesson on the 8 main parts and 6 main tasks of the digestion system.

Task 3)

For your third task, you will continue to explore the digestive system by playing 2 interactive games attached below. Before playing both games, be sure go complete the "Digestion Tutorial" in order to learn and review the information necessary to compete each game and the quiz at the end of this lesson.

Evaluation

Congratulations biologists! You completed all of the assignments in this web quest on the human digestive system. Now, to show how much of an expert you are on the digestive system, please complete the quiz attached below.

IMPORTANT: The is a 19 question quiz. As you answer each question, your score will appear in the top right hand corner of the page. At question 19, the quiz will end. Before exiting out of this page, please screenshot your score or export the webpage as a PDF. If you exit out of the page before you screenshot your score, your answers will not save and you will have to re-do the quiz. Please attach and email me the screenshot or PDF of your quiz results.
