A Journey Through Space

Introduction

This is a science course for First grade science.   It is an introduction to our solar system.  It will look at the sun, moon, and where our planets are in the solar system.

Task

You will learn that there are eight major planets in our Solar System and that we live on Earth. The sun gives our planet light and creates the season.

You will create a three dimensional model of the eight planets in our solar system.  They need to be in order starting with the sun.  There will also be a cut-and-paste handout on the four seasons and where the sun is during the seasons.

Process

                        PLANET ROLL CALL!

Eight planets around the sun. Listen as I call each one!

Mercury? Here! Number one: The closest planet to the sun.

Venus? Here! Number two: Shining bright, just like new!

Earth? Here! Number three: Earth is home to you and me.

Mars? Here! Number four:  Red and ready to explore!

Jupiter? Here! Number five:  The largest planet and that's no jive!

Saturn? Here! Number six:  With rings of dust and ice that mix!

Uranus? Here! Number seven: A planet that is titled high in heaven.

Neptune Here! Number eight: With one dark spot that's size is great!

We have eight planets in our Solar System. These planets circle around the sun ,which gives them  light and creates the seasons on Earth.

A lot of astronomy people like to think of the Solar System been made up in two parts We have the Inner Solar System which has Mercury Venus, Earth and Mars. These are closest to the sun and are called the terrestrial planets simply because the have very solid rocky surfaces.

The Outer Solar System has Jupiter, Saturn, Neptune and Uranus. These are sometimes called the gas giants.

We will use this information to create a three dimensional model of the planets in order.

You'll then prepare models, figuring out the supplies needed, then working with them to illustrate to a first grade class what order the planets are in our solar system.

Conclusion

Let's take a look back at what we learned!  There are eight planets in the solar system.  The sun offers our planets light and creates the seasons on Earth.  The planets closer to the sun are terrestrial and the ones farther away are giant planets.  Our knowledge of space and the planets will continue to grow as we do.  Soon we will learn things such as:

What is the galaxy that we live in?

What are stars made out of?

What are comets and asteroids?
