Abigail: Job Equality

Introduction

What is job equality between genders? What jobs do you think only men should do? What jobs do you think only women can do?

What do you think of when you hear of a janitor? probably a 40 year old man in a grey jumpsuit with a mop in his hand, right? Or room service, you think of a women wearing a maid dress pushing a cleaning cart full of utensils. Weather you notice it or not, you are stereotyping genders and their roles in society.

Task

 While reading...

~look for ways to protest and write your own ways to protest in these situations (at least 2 to 3 ways)

~decide if you agree or disagree and why

~write a summary and include your your opinion on the topic of job equality

Process

 You might think that only women protest for job equality, that their just making a fuss. But it's not just women wanting attention, it's not just women in general. Men are also protesting for equality in a work place.

For example, a group of male Swedish train operators, frustrated with having to wear long pants due to their company's dress code, found another way to beat the heat : skirts. Drivers and conductors started wearing skirts to work to protest the company's ban on shorts. With highs in the mid- 60s to low 70s - but drivers have said temperatures could top 90 degrees in their cabins.https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/dr-gridlock/wp/2013/06/11/male-swedish-train-conductors-wear-skirts-to-protest-dress-code/?noredirect=on&utm_term=.045060573a70

Do you know what the Equal Pay Acts is? The Equal Pay Acts of 1963 is a united states labor law amending the Fair Labor Standards Act, aimed at abolishing wage disparity based on sex. It was signed into law on June 10, 1963, by John F. Kennedy. as part of his New Frontier Program. In passing the bill, Congress stated that sex discrimination.

  • depresses wages and living standards for employees necessary for their health and efficiency;
  • prevents the maximum utilization of the available labor resources;
  • tends to cause labor disputes, thereby burdening, affecting, and obstructing commerce;
  • burdens commerce and the free flow of goods in commerce; and
  • constitutes an unfair method of competition.

The law provides (in part) that:

No employer having employees subject to any provisions of this section [section 206 of title 29 of the United States Code] shall discriminate, within any establishment in which such employees are employed, between employees on the basis of sex by paying wages to employees in such establishment at a rate less than the rate at which he pays wages to employees of the opposite sex in such establishment for equal work on jobs[,] the performance of which requires equal skill, effort, and responsibility, and which are performed under similar working conditions, except where such payment is made pursuant to (i) a seniority system; (ii) a merit system; (iii) a system which measures earnings by quantity or quality of production; or (iv) a differential based on any other factor other than sex

 Even with the equal pay acts we women are still getting paid less then men. some might say that it is because a majority of women just have lower paying jobs but even with the same job as men we still get paid less. Women get paid 77% of what men make on adverage.

In a recent Gallup poll, 15 percent of American women said that they have been passed over for a promotion or an opportunity at work because of their gender. Thirteen percent reported having been denied a raise for the same reason.This is a problem disproportionately affecting women. When Gallup asked men these questions, just 8 percent said they were denied a promotion because of their gender and a mere 4 percent reported being denied a raise for that reason. Thirty-one percent think they would be paid more if they were male, and men agreed — 20 percent felt they would be paid less if they were female.https://thinkprogress.org/15-percent-of-women-say-they-were-denied-promotions-because-of-gender-f8fb3f2c94e5/

The number of women promoted to the highest levels within companies reveals unconscious biases

Conclusion

 In conclusion, women and men are not treated equally at work. Even with acts like the Equal Pay Acts we are still not being paid equally. This proves just how ''Important'' this is to the government. They only did these Acts for show not even enforcing or monitoring them. Women come here to make a living and take care of there families only to be let down and paid less then they deserve just like the men do. So get out there, tell everyone all genders should get paid equally for the hard work they do. Go ahead post it on social media #equal pay, equal opportunity, equal rights
