Soul music is one of 1) the most popular\popularest genre of African American music. This genre created some other musical types such as funk and dance music. It developed in the USA in the late 1950s from African American church music called "gospel music". After slavery ended in 1865, African Americans were not welcome in the churches of white Americans, so they built their own churches and sang Christian songs with African-American vocal styles and rhythms. They sang 2) more optimistic\optimisticer gospel songs while clapping and moving to the rhythm. They sang 3) more slow\slower gospel songs that expressed deep feelings like praying for God's love. These two styles led to the style of soul music.
EARLY SOUL MUSIC
The first soul songs were created when gospel songs were changed into secular songs by writing new lyrics. Gospel songs turned into soul songs about romantic love. An example of such a song is the song “I've Got a Woman“ by Ray Charles. Ray Charles is one of 4) the most popular\populiarest soul musicians ever. This song is a secular version of the old gospel song I've Got a Savior (Я узрел Спасителя). Another example of the style of soul is the song “Please, Please, Please“ composed by James Brown in 1956. He turned a gospel song about praying for God's love into a song about asking for a girl's love.
However, there were songs not only about romance. Some lyrics were about 5) siriouser\more serious topics such as rasicm.
Sam Cooke was one of 6) the most talented\talentest songwriters. Sam wrote his last and greatest song “A Change is Gonna Come” in 1964. The song expressed his wish for stopping racism, but before it was released Sam was murdered in Los Angeles. Even though his life was short, his success opened the way for many other African American soul singers.

ROCK
By 1960, rock and roll lost its popularity. Some young people began experimenting with rock and roll. They combined it with other styles such as blues, gospel and country to create a new genre called "rock music" or "rock".
EARLY BRITISH ROCK
The most successful British band was the Beatles, who formed in 1960. They became popular after spending three years playing in small clubs in Liverpool and Germany. By April 1964 their songs held the top five on the US singles chart. Their success led to what's called the "British Invasion" when lots of other British bands toured America, like the Who, the Kinks and the Rolling Stones.
GLAM ROCK
The history of rock includes several periods when the music began to lose its energy and rebellious spirit. In the early 1970s, most mainstream rock was dull, but glam rock artists like David Bowie kept the spirit of rock music alive.
ALTERNATIVE ROCK
In the 1980s, a new style called alternative rock developed. The most successful alternative bands included The Smiths in the UK and The Red Hot Chili Peppers in the USA. In the 1990s, a new style of alternative rock called "grunge" was created by American bands Nirvana and Pearl Jam, while in the UK Britpop bands Radiohead, P.J. Harvey, and Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds.
