When you get to the fair, many of your friends are riding the great Ferris Cycle Water Wheel. There's a sign explaining what stages the wheel goes through. The wheel will go through the Evaporation, Precipitation, Transpiration, Condensation, and Runoff stage. You and your friends will become solid, liquid, or gas while riding the Ferris Cycle Water Wheel. You and your friends are up next, so buckle up and enjoy the ride!!!

Task

You and your friends are on the Ferris Cycle Water Wheel!! Your first job is to enjoy the ride and your second job is to gather information throughout the ride so you can make your project!

While you and 3 or 4 of your friends are on the Ferris Cycle Water Wheel you will need to keep track of these 4 things:

  • Write down your own definitions of Evaporation, Precipitation, Transpiration, Condensation, and Runoff.
  • 3 things you learned about the water cycle.
  • How solid, liquid, and gas have a part in the water cycle.
  • Why it is important for the Earth.

Once you have all this information you can now put together your project. You can pick from 3 things:

  1. Poster
  2. Movie
  3. Make up a song or a rap

Process

You and your friends start out your journey at the bottom of the Ferris Cycle Water Wheel; this is where the water cycle also starts off. It is known as groundwater or runoff water because it is on the ground. Then the ride starts! You begin to go up and you may notice that things are beginning to get a bit steamy. This is because ground water is doing something called evaporation. Evaporation is when water gets so hot that it turns into a gas and begins to float up towards the sky.

The ride continues and you're so close to the top. The air should feel dense and heavy because all that gas that is floating up into the sky from evaporation is collecting there and going through condensation. Condensation is where the gas starts to cool off and turn back into water droplets. As they say “what goes up must come down”. As you start making your way back to the ground you and your friends start to feel rain droplets, this is known as precipitation. Those water droplets are too heavy to stay so high up, so they fall right out of the sky to the ground just as you go down on the Ferris Wheel.

Finally, the ride is over and you and your friends get off but the ride continues with other kids joining, just at the water cycle continues as the rain falls, creating more groundwater to be evaporated, condensed, precipitating all over again.  Now that you and your friends have ridden the Ferris Cycle Water Wheel you have all the information you need to ace that project and you got to ride the coolest water ride around!
