Understanding Order of Operations for Algebra 1

Introduction

by Audrey Little

The commutative and associative laws of addition and multiplication allow adding terms in any order and multiplying factors in any order—but mixed operations must obey the standard order of operations, so we are going to research the rules to help us work algebraic expressions, equations and inequalities to prepare for the state test.

Task

Your task is to research and review order of operations.  With this knowledge you will answer questions by explaining your understanding which you will submit by creating a Google Slide presentation and then share with the class on your google drive. Through research on different websites including videos and games, you will expand your knowledge of the order of operations and complete practice problems.  Your research should include these operations and how they are used and then apply these rules to real life situations.

Real World Application:

Martha pays 20 dollars for materials to make earrings. She makes 10 earrings and sells 7 for 5 dollars and 3 for 2 dollars. Write a numerical expression to represent this situation and then find Martha's profit?

Solution

(7 × 5) + (3 × 2) - 20

= 35 + 6 - 20

= 41 - 20

Answer = 21

Martha makes a profit of $21.

After you understand the operations, play the following Order of Operations game:

Questions to consider when creating your Google Slide presentation.

  • Why does order of operations become important in Algebra?
  • What is the correct order of operations?
  • Do you add or multiply first?
  • What if there are parenthesis inside of parenthesis?
  • What if there are brackets instead of parenthesis?
  • Do you work left to right only when multiplying or dividing?
  • Why does order of operations matter when working a word problem?
  • How does order of operations relate to real world situations?
  • Why should I learn order of operations to work equations and inequalities?
  • Describe the process of what the PEMDAS mnemonic means.
