Eco-friendly Friend!

Introduction

Hi Students!

I have produced this Webquest to learn the importance of using the definite article and zero article. In this webquest, we are going to deal with the defferent uses of both of them. So, you should be very focused when doing this Webquest.

I hope you really enjoy the task.

Click on the button 'task' to be aware of the task you need to do.

Task

THE TASK: In groups of four, you need to plan a discussion! Two members will support the 3 R's; however, the other two will reject them.

To carry out the task properly, you should move to 'process'.

Enjoy!

Process

1. Correct the homework with the teacher.

(Rewatching the video again to check your answers).

PRE-TASK:

2. In groups of four watch the following video about the importance of the 3R's (Reduce, Reuse and Recycle).

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hX8XTOR-WV8

3. Read these sentences related to the content presented in the video.

1) Sophia is trying to persuade citizens in the UK to cut down on waste.

2) She considers that the Thames is so polluted because citizens do not apply the 3R's at home.

3) She reuses a plastic container to reduce the amount of plastic waste humans accumulate.

She uses the plastic container to keep her family's leftover food.

4) We should know the 3R's to respect the environment.

5) Package bags should be checked to know if products can be recycled.

6) Be careful to buy loose fruit which is in a bad condition. You may need to go to hospital.

7) In 2039, the Earth will be very pollued. We should do our best to reduce waste!

4. Within the group,  Complete the rules with the definite article and the zero article.

We use the ________...

a) when we have mentioned something before.

b) when we refer to geographical features (rivers, mountain ranges, seas, oceans...).

c) when we refer to countries which are plural nouns or whose name includes kingdom, states or republic.

d) when there is only one.

We use the ________...

e) when we talk about things in general.

f) when we talk about places that are institutions (hospital, school, prison...).

g) when we refer to sports, most countries, cities, languages, years and days of the week.

5. Send your answers in a Word or Oppen Office document to the teacher's email.

6. All together, look at these sentences. Include a definite article if it is necessary.

a) I don't think that (1) money is importnat in life. I really consider that (2) environment and (3) atmosphere are more important.

b) Can you give me (4) money that you owe me?

c) I don't often watch (5) videos about ecology, but I watched (6) video you told me. It was very interesting.

d) I visited (7) school on (8) Friday. I realised that there are many recyclable bins. How amazing!

e) Is that scientist form (9) USA or (10) Canada? He just wrote a very good research article about our terrible habits to

damage (11) environment.

f) There was a blogger who posted tips to protect our planet from pollution. (12) blogger became very well-known in Britain.

7. After finishing, one of the group members should type the answers in a Word or Oppen Office document and send them to the teacher's email.

TASK:

1- After doing the previous activities, you should think about the roles of every group member. Remember that you are four people:

  • SCRIPT WRITERS: you should write the script of  a  discussion about the 3 R's. In order to do it properly, you should see both sides of the coin. Therefore, you should support both points of view sensibly:
    • Eco-friendly students: they believe in the 3 R's and do everything they can to protect the environment (i.e. classify rubbish into different rubbish bins to recycle).
    • Students who are not eco-friendly: they believe that protecting the environment is a lie because nothing will help the environment. It is just a means to charge more money to citizens.

  • Don't forget to use vocabulary dealing with the environment and the definite article and the zero article. Additionally, you should use expressions for a proper discussion. You can use a couple of them:

  • ACTORS/ACTRESSES: The 4 members of the group will film or record the discussion in front of the camera or microphone. You must read and remember the script. Practise your role a couple of times in order to perform it right!
  • CAMERA OPERATOR: In case you use https://flipgrid.com/ (use this code: flipgrid.com/enoral4),  one member at a time will have to record the discussion with the camera on the mobile phone. This communicative situation cannot last more than 3 minutes.

    • However, if you decide to record your voice with https://voicethread.com/, make sure that your voice is audible. This communicative situation cannot last more than 3 minutes.

2- Finally, your task is competed successfully!

Evaluation

In order to assess you, I will use the rubrics posted on the website.

Additionally, I will give you some individual and group feedback.

Conclusion

Finally, you have finished the task! You should feel very confident if you need to plan any discussion about ecology! I hope you have taken in everything we have learnt in this Webquest!

I will correct your discussion with the rubrics and I will give you some individual and group feedback by email.

Remember that the definite article and the zero article have different uses. For instance, we use the definite article to talk about things that we have already mentioned. However, we use the zero article to talk about things in general. Of course, we have learnt many other uses.

See you soon with more Webquests!
