International/World Music WebQuest!

Introduction

Music from around the world has its own characteristics, history, artists and is often times a direct reflection of the culture in which it comes from. Music from various cultures oftentimes influences music found in another. Studying music that we don't hear on a regular basis can open our perspectives and ears to new sounds and ideas.

Learning Target:  I can Investigate music from various places of the world, and analyze relationships among the instrument, the use of sound, and the place of origin.

Task

In this WebQuest you will research music from a particular culture including its history, characteristics and a specific artist.  You will then create a flyer advertising this music and artist to try to encourage someone to listen to this particular artist or music.

Process

Read all the steps before you begin so you know what your objectives are!

Step 1 - Do some preliminary research and choose an artist from your assigned area of the world.  You should use the links on the left to help get you started.

If your last name begins with:

A - D:  you will research Asia

E - H:  you will research Africa

I - L:  you will research North America/Canada

M-P:  you will research Europe

Q-T:  you will research Latin America

U - Z :  you will research the Caribbean

Step 2 - Conduct more in-depth research for your particular area of the world and start collecting facts on the culture's music and artist for your flier.  You should obtain at least 10 facts on the culture's music and 10 facts on your chosen artist. (More is better because it is easier to leave out information instead of scrambling for more when you don't have enough).  You should obtain at least two images for your flyer so keep an eye out for those as you conduct your research.

Use the links listed under the assignment on Google Classroom to help get you started in your search.  You are not bound to the links provided and should feel free to do your own research.

Step 3 - You must keep notes on your research.  You will submit your notes to Miss Bolt. Your notes should contain 10 facts/characteristics on the music and 10 facts on the artist.  In addition to submitting your 10 facts you must also include any additional websites you used in your research. (if you used additional websites you must include those sites in your notes)

Notes should look like the Sample Notes (see under the assignment on Google Classroom).

Step 4 -  Create a flyer using Google Docs.

On your flyer you should:

1. Highlight the characteristics of the music

2. Highlight your chosen artist

3. Include at least two images (you may include more)

4. Include your name somewhere on your flier.  It should say Flyer By: [Your Name]

You want to make it exciting and fun to look at as well making sure it provides accurate information. Consider the background, and font style and colour.

Step 5 -  Submit your work to Miss Bolt.

1.  Notes can be handed into the bin if you would like to write them on paper (or if they electronic you may upload them to Google Classroom).

2.  Upload your completed flyer to Google Classroom

Conclusion

You should have experienced a new part of the world and have learned about a new artist.  In what ways can you relate the music you enjoy to the music you learned about? Spread the word... music is alive in all cultures and many times unique to those people who bring it to life!
