Introduction
Take notes as you go investigate transformations. This is in place of the lecture on transformations and should provide you with the details you need to complete the homework for this section.
To begin learning, click on "Task" in the navigation bar.
Task
What will you accomplish?
By the end of the webquest you should be able to:
- Determine how graphs are shifted up/down
- Determine how graphs are shifted left/right
- Determine how graphs are stretched/shrunk
- Determine how graphs are reflected
To get started, click "Process" in the navigation bar
Process
Make sure you take notes as you go - I will not be going over this information in class!
You will be visiting several websites which have practice embedded so you can check yourself along the way.
Go to Mathisfun - Function Grapher (click the link) a
- Take notes as you go!
- Start with the function y = x^2 and try different variations of the function to see how the graph changes. Here are some to consider, note how the graph changes from the parent function.
-
y = x^2 + 2 y = (x + 2)^2 y = x^2 - 2 y = (x - 2)^2 y = -x^2 y = 2(x^2) y = 0.5(x^2)
-
Go to Desmos (click the link) to use sliders and verify your hunch from the first activity.
- Take notes as you go!
- Note, the a value is equal to 1 for the parent function
Go to Desmos (click the link) use the sliders again to see if this theory applies to the other parent functions.
- Take notes as you go!
- Note, the a and b values are equal to 1 for the parent function
Go to MyOpenMath, Unit: Functions, Linear Functions, and Transformations, Transformations and review the videos in Khan Academy
