Introduction
Welcome to the digital part of your Guided DBQ!
As part of this DBQ, we are exploring the physical and chemical changes that matter in the universe around us experiences. To be successful in this WebQuest, you will need to have your DBQ packets and notes templates on hand. When visiting these links, you will use your notes templates to pull out important information that you will use in completing your Culminating Task.
Enjoy these sources and the plethora of information they provide you!
Happy Hunting

Task
You will be sent on a virtual scavenger hunt. Your goal is to visit the links provided throughout your journey. In each task, you will have specific goals & objectives to meet.
Task 1 - History of Fuel Efficiency Standards in the U.S.
- Your first (digital) stop will be https://www.energy.gov/articles/infographic-road-fuel-efficiency
- Here, you will discover a timeline in fuel efficiency standards
- Answer the following questions
1. What is the purpose of setting fuel efficiency standards?
2. How are fuel efficiency standards beneficial to U.S. consumers?
3. The release of what gas, from cars, trucks, busses, planes, and trains contributes to air pollution?
4. In following these new fuel efficiency standards, how much reduction in oil consumption is possible?
5. How does setting standards for fuel efficiency benefit the economy? - Use answers to guide you in developing a claim that answers the question: Does the regulation of fuel efficiency benefit the U.S. Consumer?
Task 2 - The Good, The Bad, and The Downright Ugly
- This will be the second (digital) stop on the tour https://www.npr.org/tags/138818225/fuel-efficiency
- Here we will look at the pros & cons of fuel efficiency standards
Listen to the following podcasts from NPR. As you listen, take notes on the corresponding DBQ sheet.
a) Is Obama's Hope for Better Fuel Economy Sputtering Out?
b) EPA moves to Weaken Landmark Fuel Efficiency Standards
c) States Sue EPA to Protect Obama - Era Fuel Efficiency Standards - Using your notes, find evidence that supports your answer to the question, Does the regulation of fuel efficiency benefit the U.S. Consumer?
Process
This is an individual task. It is the digital component of our DBQ that explores the physical and chemical changes that all matter in the universe around us experiences. As you complete the tasks using the links provided, you will be taking notes and answering questions. The notes templates and text dependent questions associated with this DBQ will be provided in your DBQ packet.
Throughout this DBQ, you will be learning to analyze multiple sources and use the information collected from each source to answer the question posed by the DBQ. The skills you will acquire or sharpen throughout the DBQ process are: problem solving skills, critical thinking skills, analysis skills, and communication skills.

Annotation |
Students have chosen & identified a unique short hand to annotate DBQ texts |
Students have created a key that clearly defines their annotation codes used in their DBQ texts |
The key clearly identifies what symbols and/or colors the student is using to represent their understanding of DBQ texts |
Notes |
Students use the notes template(s) provided to record relevant information from DBQ texts |
Notes templates are organized and completed |
Completed notes templates are used to supply evidence to support student’s claim in culminating task |
Pre-Writing |
After evaluating all DBQ texts, students use the essential question to come up with a claim. |
Using notes collected throughout the DBQ, students will complete their (2) pre-writing templates |
Based on pre-writing brainstorm, students complete a rough draft of their culminating task |
Peer Review |
Students must have a rough draft to submit to participate in peer review |
Students who have submitted a rough draft will use the peer review guides to review (2) rough drafts |
Final Product |
Students have submitted their final product ON TIME |
The final product has been corrected using peer feedback |
The final product submitted meets the guidelines posed by the instructor |
