Exploring the Potomac River

Introduction

With its waters flowing through Washington, D.C. the Potomac River is one to be visited for its beauty and history.  You work for a tourism agency promoting natural and urban tourism along the Potomac River.  With your team members, create a brochure informing visitors of an area along the river and encouraging them to visit it.

Task

Your job is to:

  • locate an area you would like to promote
  • gather information about this area
  • create a brochure informing readers of the activities and sights in this area and encouraging them to visit it
  • present it to the review committee

Process

1. First, you will get into groups of three.

2. Then, choose which area you would like to present in your brochure:

  • Harpers Ferry
  • C&O Canal / Great Falls
  • National Harbor
  • Georgetown
  • Alexandria

3. Think about your audience - who is your brochure for.

4. Brainstorm the information you need for your brochure.  You can use the RWT handout on Moopaed to help you. Visit the websites on Moopaed to gather your information.

5. Organize your ideas and write out the different sections. Remember to use language that informs and persuades the reader.

6. Create a brochure.

7. Present your brochure to the review committee.

Evaluation

Now, that you have created your brochure. You will present it to the review committee. It will be evaluated based on:

  1. Content - informational enough to help the reader become familiar and interested in the area
  2. Language - informative and persuasive
  3. Layout - interesting and attractive
