Task
Task 1 - What is money?
Key Learning Objectives:
What is money, not all countries use the same currency, differentiation between coins and notes.
Task 1 - What is money, view the power-point below BUT before you do on piece of paper (or in your maths book) brainstorm what you already know about money! Think about when you use money, why and when, do you receive money, what does money look like, can you draw some money?
The first power-point presentation is designed to allow you to begin thinking about money and to remind you of some important points about money. If you have any further questions please ask your teacher.
Extension: While exploring the presentation you may ask your teacher to look, feel and trace plastic math's money from the classroom. Look at the animals on different symbols on the money (both coins and notes) and explore! Who are the people represented on the coins and why are they significant?

Task 2 - How Much Is Your Word Worth?
Key Learning Objectives:
Carrying out Calculations, solving problems.
This worksheet you will need to print off. It is a two page worksheet where you will need to use a list of words, linked with your current mathematics topic. Refer to the worksheet for further details.
The worksheet will be complete by using addition skills to find out how much each word is worth. Feel free to use a calculator to check your answers or compare with others once you have had a go!

Task 3 - Money Problem Solving Sentences
Key Learning Objectives:
Carrying out Calculations, solving problems.
Please print the problem solving worksheet (or complete in workbook, using steps to solve word problems) and work through the real life questions one by one. If help is required please ask your teacher. YOU must show your working out!
Extension: Once you finish the money problem solving worksheet try some of the addition and subtraction sums on the website below, you will be required to print them off.

Task 4 - Exploring different currencies
Key Learning Objectives: Carrying out calculations in another currency as well as in dollars and cents, and identifying both as decimal systems
Have a crack at some of these games on these links. Different countries use different currencies for example Australia uses Dollars, Italy uses Euros and Japan uses Yen. It is great to be able to understand that other countries use different forms of money, not only do they have different names but look different and different in how much money they are. See if you can familiarise yourself with some of these terms.
This link shows you a list of all the different countries in the world and their different currencies:

This website is called a currency converter and allows you to compare different prices of money in different currencies.

Task 5 - Rounding up
Key Learning Objectives: Solve problems involving purchases and the calculation of change to the nearest five cents with and without digital technologies
In task 5 you will look at rounding up money in different addition and subtraction sums. Rounding up money to the nearest 5 cents is really important as in shops and dealing with everyday money you will often find that money reads like this: $5.99, this is where you round up money to the nearest 5 cents as explained in the worksheet to be $6.00.

Conclusion
How did you go!?
Brainstorm now what you have learnt and compare it to what you knew before you started.
Did you learn much?
Make sure you have given all the activities your best shot and if you are unsure ask your teacher or a friend for assistance.
