Background information & Welcome:
Hospital acquired infection numbers have increased over the past three months. Staff need an education about correct hand washing and reasons for completing this process correctly.
Welcome to this educational opportunity on hand washing.
Type of Program: Clinical course for hospital staff – Hand Washing
This course will provide multiple forms of current education for hand washing guidance. Through the month of October, a week will be dedicated to the completion of each step such as Net Learning activity, written test completion, and finally alive competency testing. On the Monday of each week an instruction for that week’s section will be email and posted in employee breakrooms as reminders.
Everyone is responsible for completion of each section. Competency sign up times are listed outside the education suite. If you have questions or need other arrangements made please contact Education at *4448 Beth Lake RN
Task
Course description:
- This is basic hand hygiene course that can utilized for all facility departments at new hire orientation and annually thereafter.
Identify any pre or co-requisites for the course:
- Complete Annual employee physical and immunizations as required by facility & NYS law
- Completion of basic employee orientation, and annually thereafter hand washing education in-service.
Describe the placement of this course in the total curriculum:
- This course provides the basic reasoning and instruction for proper handwashing technique
Process
Weekly learning activities:
Week one: Complete online Net Learning activities (Hand washing, sanitizer use, standard precautions, Transmission based precautions, and HAI) and sign off completion.
Week two: Complete the written hand washing test with a passing score. Test answer sheets will be emailed out and paper copies supplied to the units. The test will not be available unit 8AM week two Monday.
Week three: Complete hand washing competency with a 100% passing score
Week four: Staff make ups – Please call Education at *4448 to set up an appointment.
All sections must be completed by 10/31/2018. Any employee not completed will have his/her name sent to Human resources for coaching and counseling per Facility policy.
Evaluation
Assessment and evaluation
Assessment and evaluation of learning outcomes and program outcomes will be completed through individual signatures of completion, relevant scoring on test and live passing of competency.
1. Completing the required reading in online employee Net Learning with individual signoff for completion. This initial reading provides basic knowledge and research from credible sources from with the following educational opportunities will be based upon.
2. Individual hand washing live competency completed with 100% being met, any score less will require continued attempts by individual until competency has been met totally.
3.Completion of a written hand washing test involving interdisciplinary scenario’s scoring 90-100%.
Conclusion
Outcomes:
Each of the three required sections listed will successfully educate and provided evidenced based knowledge for the handwashing requirements of this facility.
Provide at least 3 course outcomes.
- Each employee will be able to wash their hands according to CDC guidelines.
- Each employee will be able to list times when they must wash their hands.
- Each employee will understand the difference in soap and water, and hand sanitizer solutions and when each should be used.
It is important for our employees to follow correct handwashing techniques to prevent the spread of infection and provide safety to our patients and each other and the community
