Introduction
Welcome to The Catcher in the Rye WebQuest
Task
The Task will be to make a movie poster for The Catcher in the Rye.
This book has never been made into a movie, so your ideas must solely be based on what you imagine the poster will look like.
Remember that this book is full of symbolism, this may be something to think about including on your poster.
Also think about how you can represent the voice and tone of Holden on your poster through the use of fonts, images etc.
Process
1. Begin by finding the definition for the following words: Voice, Tone, Symbols, Language
- On a separate Microsoft Word or Google Doc write the definition of these words as well as their importance in literature. Be sure to cite your sources for your definitions
2. Find five symbols from The Catcher and the Rye
- Find a picture and explain their importance. Add this information to the document you created for question one.
** Hint- John Green can help- you don't need to watch the whole video, but may help with your explanations.
3. Watch John Green's video on Language and Voice. Write a paragraph about the importance of language and voice throughout The Catcher and the Rye. How does it help the story? What kind of language and Voice does Holden use?
4. Using FotoJet or another online resource create a movie poster that represents the information talked about above. Include symbols, voice and language to promote this movie. Be sure to include key ideas like name of movie, possible actors etc. Write one paragraph explaining your poster. (Possible to create poster by hand, see teacher)
5. You will turn in your poster and Microsoft or Google Doc.
Evaluation
Students will be graded on their working document with answers to the questions asked throughout as well as the creativity of their poster.
Conclusion
After the completion of this WebQuest students should have a better understanding of Tone, Voice, Language and Symbols. Students should be able to identify how these literary devices are used in literature in order to enhance a story. Students can identify the role these devices play in The Catcher and the Rye and be able to represent them in visual form.
