Effects of Commercial Fishing

Introduction

Effects of Commercial Fishing

Your task over the next 3 periods (Thursday 3 & 4, Friday 4) is to research how ONE type of fishery is negatively effecting fish stock, ecosystem and/or the environment.

By completing the following questions you will be able to generate a report on your chosen fishery which will be completed in Week 7 lessons.

Task

Your task:

Pick a specific fishery in Australia, it does not have to be a marine fishery it can be inland as well.

You will need to create a Google Doc to present your information. I suggest copying and pasting the instructions below and using the questions to generate subheadings for your report.

E.g. Describe the animal your fishery catches

= Description of Animal

Present your findings as a report you may give to a member of parliament. Under each subheading you need to generate a paragraph summarising your findings. A few examples are below:

Your report must include the following:

1. Information about your animal:

a. What is your animal/fishery?

b. What does your animal look like?

c. What does the animal in your fishery eat and what does it eat to survive?

d. Where does your animal naturally live?

2. Information about your fishery:

a. Where does your fishery fish?

b. How much fish does your fishery catch?

c. Who is catching all the fish?

d. What methods are used to catch the fish?

3. What are the trends and problems with the fishery:

a. Is your fishery catching less fish now than in the past?

b. Who manages the fishery?

c. What is the major problem with the fishery?

d. Why is this the main problem? (fishermen, poor management, overfishing, expense)

4. Propose solutions (including pros and cons of the solution):

a. What is your solution and why did you choose it?

b. How does your solution specifically help the problem?

c. How does the solution affect fishermen, consumers and the environment?

d. Are there any other negative consequences from your solution?

5. Evidence to prove your solution is working:

a. How do you observe your solution at work? (Observation, tagging etc.)

b. Why did you choose this type of evidence?

c. What are projected numbers for the population based on your solution?

Process

Follow these simple steps to produce the best report you can.

1. Copy and paste the questions onto a fresh Google Doc.

2. Generate subheadings for your report based off the questions.

E.g. Describe the animal your fishery catches

= Description of Animal

3. Collect information from the internet to answer the questions. Answer your questions on your Google Doc.

4. Record and document all resources and websites you have used for your reference list.

5. Once you've answered all the questions, print out your findings and start to draft a report. Ensure to use PEEL when writing your paragraphs.

6. Find another finished student to proof read your work, make any changes they suggest and type up your final report!
