Planning a Trip to Mars

This WebQuest, is designed for 4-5th grade students excited to explore Mars and its very different characteristics from Earth. Students will gather their information through articles, and videos.

Congratulations! You and 3 of your friends have been selected to take a trip to Mars! This is the trip of a life time! But you are responsible for packing everything you may need while you are there. Remember, Mars is a much different environment than Earth so make sure you do your research so you are prepared for this unforgettable experience! Will you be able to bring everything you need to survive and thrive? Lets get you started with some valuable information. Remember, astronauts need to pack light so make sure you only bring what is absolutely necessary!

Task

For this WebQuest, you will complete the following bullets. This may take you up to two class periods.

  • You will read an article (it is a dense one so please read carefully) 
  • You will watch two different videos 
  • Make a detailed description of the environment you will be encountering on Mars
  • Make an itemized list of necessary gear you will need
  • Complete an 8 question quiz to ensure you have the knowledge needed to survive on Mars

After this WebQuest, you will be able identify and explain key environmental factors on Mars. You will be able to describe how the environment on Mars is different than Earth and how these differences will influence your packing list. You will also be able to explain how the environment on Mars has changed over time. By the end of this Web Quest you will be able to use all of the information you gathered to make informed decisions on the essential items needed to survive on Mars. You will also be able to provide specific reasoning for the items you choose to bring based off of the environment on Mars.

You will be scored on the following criteria on a scale of 0 (did not include) - 5 (very well done) as well as a 8 question quiz. The WebQuest score and Quiz score will be added together for a total of 28 points.
