A. Highlight of Accomplishment
Brief Introduction
Community extension program is one of the many missions of Caraga State University that will provide quality service in professional and technological training, particularly in the Caraga Regionn. As a state institution, its mandate is to support socio-economic development in its service area through the basic functions of instructions, research, extension, and production. Research provides the foundation for the other three functions, hence, a sound Research and Development (R&D) program should be formulated and implemented to answer the needs of the people in its service area.
The personhood development program in Brgy. Pianing is very helpful among its residents because this project covers many dimensions and one of this is “Maka-kalikasan”. In this dimension, the organizers have conducted training programs among parents in Barangay Pianing, Butuan City to teach proper ways of disposing of their solid waste materials/garbage in their surroundings. They trained also on how to maintain good/proper hygiene and sanitation including proper care or their family members.
Highlights of Activities
Despite the slight delayed of the project implementation and establishment of the project team, the project was realized and implemented in Brgy. Pianing, Butuan City, Agusan del Norte last June 9, 2017. The activities were successfully conducted among selected women regarding “Maka-kalikasan” as part of the Personhood Development Program of the Caraga State University Extension Program. It envisioned in teaching women in the barangay to be aware of the cleanliness of the surroundings and proper hygiene and sanitation.
During the conduct of the program, the speakers have introduced the topics with the help of PowerPoint presentation. The topics were focused on the content of the topic with the following sub-topics, namely: (a) “Maka-kalikasan” as core value, proper waste disposal (Bio-degradable and Non-biodegradable), ailments caused by dirty surroundings/environment, proper protection of the nature, having compost pit in their house and recycling of non-biodegradable materials and personal hygiene and sanitation. These topics were very helpful to their part because they have less background in terms of proper disposing garbage in their surroundings; they have less idea about the harmful effects of improper throwing of garbage elsewhere and the benefit or livelihood out from the recycled materials.
During the lecture, the participants have participated with the speakers. Exchanging of their experiences was pointed out as they relate in the discussion. Some were responsive in terms of ideas about the topic but others were just listening. Others were doing correct segregation of their garbage or recycled materials in their house. As the speaker asked the participants regarding some activities in their house about the lecture, some of them were just nodding their heads and they were not doing deeply it in their community. Their local officials do not have the program about solid waste management system and even provided livelihood from recycled materials. There is none local program regarding Ecological Solid Waste Management Act No. 9003 of 2000. An Act providing for an Ecological Solid Waste Management Program, creating the necessary Institutional Mechanisms and Incentives, declaring certain Acts prohibited and providing Penalties, appropriating funds, therefore, and for other purposes.
