Introduction
Drugs and alcohol are widely apparent throughout society and can have large impacts on individuals, families and communities. You or someone you know may have been exposed or could be exposed to either drugs or alcohol and it is vital that we are aware of the impacts substances can have and how to prevent from engaging in unhealthy activities.
Today you are going to explore a drug of your choice and research the impacts this drug can have on individuals, families and communities. You will explore the effects of your chosen substance on the body, the factors that influence the use of the substance, the impact of the substance on families and communities and making informed and smart decisions relating to drugs and alcohol in general. Whilst working in small groups you are going to use the information you have gathered to design and construct a 2-3 page magazine spread.
Task
Imagine you are writers for a local health and wellness magazine and your editor in chief has instructed you and a small group of co-workers to research and write a magazine spread to be featured in the next edition of the magazine. Your task is to work together with the other students in your group and chose a drug to research for your 2-3 page magazine spread. Your magazine spread should cover topics including:
- The impact your chosen drug can have on the body
- The impact your chosen drug can have on the individual, family & community
- The factors that influence the use of the substance
- Making informed and smart decisions relating to drugs and alcohol in general
This webquest will provide you resources and topic questions that will guide you to creating an informative and interesting magazine spread (these will be recorded and handed in along with your magazine spread). You will have 2 X 70 minute lesson to complete your magazine spread and when all spreads are completed they will be complied into the ‘Year 10 HPE 2018 Health and Wellness Magazine’.
Process
Your job is to research one drug and discover the impacts this drug can have on the individual, families and communities. You are required to present your information in an interesting and engaging way, ensuring the knowledge is informative. Please follow the below steps to ensure you gain enough knowledge on your topic.
1. Students will select one drug from the below list to research (please discuss with the teacher what topic you have chosen to ensure we do not have duplicates.
- Alcohol
- Marijuana
- Cocaine
- GHB
- Heroin
- Ice
- Ketamine
- LSD
- MDMA
- Speed
2. Your group will conduct your own research to obtain information about your chosen drug. You will use the provided resources and further independently selected creditable resources to collect and record information. Please use the following website to answer below questions about your chosen substance - https://www.healthdirect.gov.au/drugs-and-alcohol
You may also review other given resources if needed.
- Define the drug
- What are the desired effects of the drug? How long do they last?
- What impact does the drug have on the human body?
- What impact can the use of this drug have on the individual, their family and the community?
- Are there possible side effects of the drug? (long and short term)
- Are there different forms of the drug?
- Are overdoses common and what is the possible outcome of an overdose?
- How is the drug administered?
- What are the withdrawal symptoms of the drug?
- What treatments are available for the use of the drug?
3. You will now watch the below video on addiction. As you watch please take note of the main points presented throughout and in your group discuss and answer the below questions.
- What is addiction?
- Explain the 'Rat Park' experiment and why we need to think about addiction differently?
- Do you agree with Kurzgesagt? Why/Why not?
4. How can we make informed and smart decisions relating to drugs and alcohol in general, and what can individuals do if they find themselves needing help? Please list and explain possible treatment options and services to help those in need. Use below resources and others if needed.

5. Now that you are an expert on your chosen substance, you will use an online site called Madmagz to design and create your online magazine spread. Please follow this link and below instructions to start creating your magazine spread - https://madmagz.com/
1: Use your school email to create an account
2: Choose the ‘modern’ template

WebQuests are effective as a vehicle for utilising the vast information displayed on the internet in an organised and meaningful manner for students (Polly & Ausband, 2009). WebQuests are used as an inquiry-based tool to framework students learning, are simple for students to navigate and can be interesting and interactive. WebQuests are categorised as inquiry-orientated activities that are dependent on internet resources whilst being centred around group work and focused on higher-order thinking skills (Polly & Ausband, 2009). March (2004) explains how WebQuests inspire students to see richer thematic relationships, contributing to the real world of learning whilst also reflecting on their own metacognitive processes.
This particular webquest is designed for a year 10 HPE class, aiming to engage students of all learning abilities and styles. Formulated based on the Australian Curriculum Health and Physical Education content descriptor ‘personal, social and community health’, with particular emphasis on the sub strand ‘communicating and interacting for health and wellbeing’ (ACARA, 2017). The use of a webquest to research and design an informative magazine spread aligns with the ACARA ICT learning continuum, encouraging students to investigate, create and communicate with ICT (ACARA, 2017).
March (2004) explains that activities pointing students to only encyclopedic briefs, textbook digests or word searches are not taking advantage of internet resources that have the potential to be interactive, contemporary, media-rich and of varied perspectives. This particular webquest has been designed with different perspectives on the topic, real world situations and case studies and hard hitting information about alcohol and other drugs.
This Webquest works in correlation with the Australian Curriculum for years 9 and 10 Health and Physical Education. The curriculum supports students to develop the preventative health practises that build and optimise individual and community health and wellbeing and critically analyse and apply health information for maintaining healthy habits (ACARA, 2017).
