The European Discovery of Chocolate

Introduction

We know that cacao beans grow in tropical climates, so that means that the Europeans did not always have chocolate. How did they discover it and who was using it first? Read through the websites and answer the questions to find out!

Task

In your notebooks write the date at the top of a new clean page. Then number down the left-hand side 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 and BONUS. Leave enough space in between your numbers to write your answers, take up the whole page.

1) What was chocolatl? Who made it and how was it made?

2) Who drank it and did they use it to celebrate special holidays?

3) Why did Spanish explorers not like the taste?

4) How was it different to the chocolate we drink today?

5) Why was the cocoa bean ignored when Columbus brought it to Spain for the first time?

6) Which Spanish explorer set up the first cacao plantations?

BONUS: What happened after that?
