4. Procedures

4.1.Introductory Activity

( 3 minutes)

Ask: Who of you love music?

Say: Do you know that most people who love music are cool tempered? They also have

broader mind. Say: Music as they say, is the language of our soul. (Explain why it is it called such.)

4.2. Activity

( 10  minutes)

1. Group the class into 4 or 5. Choose a reporter.

2. Present the picture through a PowerPoint.

3. Illustrate all the notes in one column and all the rests in another column.

4. Then identify the name of the illustrated notes and rests and write it beside the symbol

5. Post your work on the board. Let a representative report your work.

4.3.Analysis

( 10  minutes)

Check the work presented by each group.

Recognize the group having the most correct answers.

4.4. Abstraction

( 15  minutes)

Through PowerPoint, present the notes and rests with their corresponding names.

Ask: What are notes as used in music? What are rests? If you can see a note symbol in a

musical staff, what does it mean? How about if you can see a rest symbol, what does it mean?

Present the musical score.

Ask: What have you noticed below the notes? How about below the rest

sign?

Say: The note will represent when an instrument will be played. Be it a drum, keyboard, guitar,

a table top or whatever. While the rest symbol will represent when an instrument or beat is not played. So we will not strike a beat or beats when a rest appears. You get to relax and allow silence to be part of your rhythm. Silence is just as important as sound. It allows you add space and accents to your music

Our basic set consists of the Whole note, Half note, the Quarter note, Eight note, and the

Sixteenth note.

Simply take a whole size of paper and divide it by two, (half size) and then again by two, (quarter) and by two again (bit=eight) and two again (half bit= sixteenth)

Whole rest:  small rectangle on bottom of line, think

of having the whole thing so heavy its pulling you down below the line

Half note    :  we add a stem to the donut

Half rest:  small rectangle on top of line, here the rest

is lighter and we can carry it above the line

Quarter note: we fill in the whole make it solid

         and keep the stem

Quarter rest:  squiggle line almost looks like a

bracket

Eighth note:  we add a flag to the stem

http://media2.picsearch.com/is?1Hkf-NkAdS8HcPAq4j3-75id02bBioo_vL9LHnifzhY&height=268

Eighth rest:  a single flag on a slash mark or stem,

similar to the eighth note with one flag

http://media2.picsearch.com/is?1Hkf-NkAdS8HcPAq4j3-75id02bBioo_vL9LHnifzhY&height=268

Sixteenth note: we add two flags to the stem

Sixteenth rest: two flags on a slash mark or stem just

like the sixteenth note with two flags

For generalization:

Ask: So what does it mean when there is a note? How about when rest symbol appears?

4.5.Application
