The Photo Essay Assignment

There will be deadlines for each stage in the project. Keep in mind, you will be working on other class assignments during the same time period. Please pay attention to the deadline dates.

There are two styles of Photo Essays; Thematic and Narrative. Your topic or subject may be a factor in determining which style you choose.

Process

Stage 1: Selecting your Topic

When selecting your topic, choose something familiar. It should be visual, interesting, and accessible. Do not over complicate this process.

Stage 2: Brainstorming your Ideas

This is an important stage in the process. This is were the ideas for photos and the framework of the essay begins. Once you have selected your topic, begin to sketch our ideas about your subject. This may require some research. I am expecting this to be professionally displayed and presented (not scribbled on a random piece of paper).

Stage 3: Creating your shooting script.

This will help to guide you through the shooting process and help you with creating multiple views and scenarios. Once you have decided your topic and have brainstormed ideas, create a shooting script based on the ideas which came out of your brainstorming. Again, you will be required to present this in a professional manager.

Stage 4: Editing

This stage can be challenging. Your final Photo Essay will be made up of 8 to 12 images. You will have to select these image from each photo shoot during the shooting process. If you have eight different shoots (outline by your brainstorming) with 20 images per shoot, you could have more than 160 images to edit.

Stage 5: Layout and Submission

Once you have selected your final images, you will begin to lay them our in a magazine-style format. I will create a template which you will use for your final submission. You will be writing an introduction describing your story which should be 3-4 paragraphs. Each image will be captioned.
