Integers are here, there and everywhere

Introduction

Open ended question:

Is it possible to use something in your everyday life and not even realise?

There are many everyday situations where we use positive and negative numbers without even realising. But now it's time to see and remember, use and understand.

When refering to negative and positive whole numbers (including 0) we are referring to the set of integers.

Some real life examples of when Miss Murray uses integers in everyday life include:

  • Measuring temperatures,
  • Money owed and paid back,
  • Increasing or decreasing my running speed on a treadmill

Over the next few lessons our learning intention will be investigating everyday situations that use integers and locating and representing these numbers on a number line. This will develop our understanding, fluency, problem-solving and reasoning skills.

Your success criteria will be:

Related image I can identify and order sets of integers: positive whole numbers, negative whole numbers, zero.

Related imageI can show using a number line that integers get smaller in value as you move them to the left and larger as you move them to the right.

Related imageI can explain how integers and number lines can be used in everyday situations

Related image I can work out distance between integers.

Related image I can use signs of inequality to compare integers.

Related imageI can apply integer concepts to solve real life scenarios.

Assessment overview

Your assessment over the next few lessons will be to use this webquest and complete the set tasks that will develop your understanding of integers and number lines in our everyday lives.

Task

Opening activity:

What do we think we already know?

List what comes to mind when you hear positive and negative numbers.

Use the thinking tool  to create a concept map to show your list.

Popplet is a tool that can help you express your initial thoughts and ideas verbally and visually.

Share your concept map with a friend. Find out what they think - ask them to explain some of there ideas?

Whole class discussion: what is the whole knowledge of positive and negative integers.

Now that we have learnt more from our friends build on your individual concept maps including more facts, thoughts, and images and learn to create relationships between them.

TASK ONE - NUMBER LINES

In order to use number lines over the next few lessons, we firstly have to know what negative numbers are. Answer the following questions:
