Watch the video above to get an understanding of what was happening to specific population groups in Europe due to Nazi occupation, as well as the primary characters mentioned in the play we'll be reading together.

Task

The students will be divided into 5 groups of 4. Each group will have a character assigned to them from the play "The Diary of Anne Frank": Anne Frank, Margot Frank, Mr. Frank, Mrs. Frank, and Mr. Van Daan.

Each group will look into both the historical and narrative characters they have been assigned. The following below is what you will be required to do as a group.

The Historical Character: Give the name, birth date (where were they born?), death date (where and how they died). Lastly, who were they (Ex. was the character Anne Frank's father or mother?)?

Reflection:  Put yourself in the character's shoes. You find yourself as a persecuted person in WW2. What would you be thinking and doing if you found yourself in Anne Frank's family's circumstances? How would you feel? Why? Tell me how you would feel before you had to hide from the Nazis, during your hiding from the Nazis, and when you were discovered by them.

If there are any questions or concerns about this, please inform me as soon as possible.

Process

  • I will assign you the characters that each group will do.
    • I expect each member to do their fair share of the work. I will be going around to make sure everyone is doing their work. If one of you is acting up, I will deduct points from you for the grade I'll be giving out.
  • Remember to have the character's name, birth date, death date, and who they were.
  • And then tell me how you would have lived if you were the character before hiding from the Nazis, during your hiding from the Nazis, and after you had been discovered by them.

Conclusion

The real life people portrayed in this play were victims of horrific crimes against humanity. If it were not for Anne Frank's diary, many people would not be able to understand the life Jews had to live under Nazi occupation, especially when they were trying to hide. Anne's diary is an important contribution to historical, ethical, and societal levels, for through her work we see the good and evil man is capable of towards others.
