Introduction
Show a video of the beat boxing flute player, beat boxing cellist, or some musical performance that will grab their attention utilizing beat boxing. Students should get excited and have questions. Discuss. Use this opportunity to explain the level of difficulty.
Task
Students will learn the art and techniques of beat boxing in addition to being exposed to complex and percussive Jazz singers. The origins of beat boxing will be discussed and studied (i.e. scat, improvisation).
Process
Through a combination of videos, direct and indirect instruction, the students will be exposed to various beat boxing performers and techniques. Between videos there will be discussion and practice sessions. The lesson will show the progression of beat boxing and percussive singing. The students will learn that beat boxing originated from jazz scat and they will be exposed to modern jazz vocalists and ensembles.
Evaluation
Formative assessments will be done during practice sessions.
Conclusion
Some kids may be shy, usually females, and not participate in the practice sessions. They can have the option of using a graphic organizer.
