Safe Touches

Introduction

Students,

Today we are going to be watching some videos to learn about different kinds of touches. Unsafe Touches are touches to private body parts, and they are abuse. No one is ever allowed to touch us there, and no one should ever ask us to touch them there.

The characters in the videos are going to help us learn the difference between touches that are safe and touches that are unsafe. They are also going to help us learn what to do if we think we’ve been touched in an unsafe way, and how to get away if someone makes us feel unsafe.

Today we will be doing lesson 1. In this activity, we will learn about everyone’s personal space boundaries by setting our own. We feel more comfortable around people know well, and we can see this by picturing circles around us that only certain people can enter.

Task

Today we will discuss what a safe touch is and what an unsafe touch is. We will discuss what you should do when you feel that someone is touching you or someone you know in an unsafe way. You will also fill out personal space worksheets to better understand what you personally are comfortable with.

Process

1. Watch the 2 videos linked below:

http://fightchildabuse.org/protect-yourself-rules/grades-k-3/k-3-lesson-1b/

2. Join in the discussion about Personal Space and the protect yourself rules.

3.Fill out the paper "Personal Space Bubble" worksheet.

a. Write the names of people who they would feel comfortable having in each space circle.

b. Personal space would have the names of friends or family members.

c. Public space can describe a stranger, like a mailman or a neighbor.

Evaluation

a. Students participate in the discsussion on personal space and the protect yourself rules.

b. Students show that they have watched the videos, based on level of interaction during discussion.

c. Students fill out their personal space worksheet honestly and thouroughly.

-Be prepared to answer the following questions during the discussion.

• Which Protect Yourself Rule tells us what to do if someone makes us feel unsafe in public?

• What is a private body part?

• If a good friend touches us in a way that makes us uncomfortable, are we allowed to tell them to stop?

• What should we do if someone asks us to touch them on a private part of their body?

• When can we tell people that we don’t want to be touched?

• If someone we know regularly touches us in a way we don’t like (such as tickling or playing) how can we set boundaries to make them stop?

• How far around us does our personal space bubble go? • When can people enter our personal space bubble?

Conclusion

Why do we feel more comfortable with certain people in certain spaces around us? It is important for us to be aware of these spaces in order to be able to tell others when they are too close to us. If someone comes into our personal space and we don’t want them to, we can tell them politely to move away. We can also be forceful if they don’t listen. It is important for us to feel safe and comfortable, and we all have to respect each other’s personal space bubbles.
