The Giver

Introduction

The novel The Giver by Lois Lowry is the second free choice book I chose. This book is #11 on the most challenged books list. With that being said it is still taught in classrooms all over the USA. This novel was published in 1993 my Houghton Mifflin with 172 pages. The genre of this novel is young adult/ science fiction, dystopia. This novel has so many morals and teaching aspects there is no way you could teach every aspect of this novel in great detail.

Task

Summary :

The Giver is a novel that follows the life of the main character Jonas, a 12 year old boy who has been chose to be the receive for his community. A receiver gets all the memories from everyone is his community transmitted to him through the giver. Jonas lives in a community that everything is the same. There is no color for anyone, different terrain, emotions, climate or anything really. The only difference between things is if you are a female or male, your age, and your job (which you are assigned). Everyone in the community stays in this state by taking pills every day. Once Jonas becomes the receiver he gets memories and feelings he realizes what once was the perfect world to him is really not at all. The story talks about the idea of release, which is when they kill someone with an injection in the community. For example the old, if a mother has twins; the smallest child. Jonas’s father does this for a job and when he watches him release a baby he cannot handle it. Jonas’ family has a baby named Gabriel stay with them for a while to see if he would settle in like a normal baby. Once Jonas figures out he is about to get released he devises a plan with the giver to escape with Gabriel, to find a world outside of this dystopia, the beyond. The Giver had a daughter himself named Rosemary. She was named the receiver and released herself after 6 weeks because she couldn’t not handle all of the pain from the memories. IF the receive dies, or leaves the community the community will receive the memories back and that’s exactly what the two wanted to happen. Once he reaches the outskirts of the nothingness he experience climate in cold, and rough terrain and he is so thankful for it.

Process

For my lesson on The Giver, I will have my introductory aspect as having a work sheet that the students would write what they would like to their utopia to look like. Once we do that I would have each students talk about what there's is. Then we will dissect parts of it to see why it might not be perfect in this world.

My lesson would be to to read the novel of course. My students will be required to do chapter questions every chapter, and a quiz I will generate online on a resource called https://quizizz.com/join/. I will do these exercises to make sure they understand every important aspect of this brilliant novel.

Evaluation

For my final evaluation, I would a flip book.

The flip book I would use would be found here : https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Blank-Flipbook-Template-1957462.

The cover would be the novel, author, and the students name. This flip book has 6 pages and on each page I would want the students to have one for characters, theme, plot, morals, setting, and point of view.

Students will be graded on all three assignments in this unit. They will be graded on thought, grammar and spelling and on a rubric.

Rubric
Student has ten or more spelling or grammar mistakes. Student has 5 or less spelling mistakes. Student has 3-0 spelling mistakes.
Student shows they have no understanding of the novel. Student shows they have no understanding of the novel. Student understands and conveys they understand 4 – all of the aspects of flip book well.
Student has only handed in 1 or 0 of the assignments in unit and is not done fully. Student has handed in 2 of assignments and is done fully. Student has finished all required work and is done fully.
