Introduction

|
While playing in your Grandpa’s attic, you stumble across a very old map. It appears to be a treasure map that goes along with the stories your Grandpa told you about a Great Ancestor who was an English Pirate.
Grandpa use to tell stories of hidden treasure on an unknown island inhabited by 3 active volcanoes. The treasure was buried beside one of the 3, but which one? Could this map be the real thing? Could you possibly decode the map’s questions to find the missing gold, and jewels? It’s time to find out, and follow the map to find the hidden treasure...

Task
The Adventure Begins:
Today you embark on a great journey to find your family’s missing treasure. To do so, you will have to travel to an island that no one has ever known the true name of, and become an expert on Volcanoes. You must be precise in your knowledge for your time may be limited. If you choose the wrong volcano to search, danger may be your future...
To begin:
Your teacher will first split you into groups, and you will then choose a group leader to record your group’s data.
You will be provided with the questions from the treasure map along with the resources to find the answers. The answers will bring you one step closer to your final destination.
The first group of explorers to answer all of the clues correctly and hand them to your teacher will be provided the last missing piece of the puzzle that uncovers the treasure. When your teacher has all of the teams answers graded and announces the winning team, you may then shout out the clue your teacher provided and the treasure is officially yours.
Disclaimer!!!!!!
Be careful explorers, for no one has ever successfully recovered this treasure. Make sure your clues are well researched. If you guess a wrong clue, your teacher will tell you your fate....
This is your chance for greatness!!!!

Process
Treasure Awaits!!!

Your first objective is to locate the lost island that the treasure is hidden on. To do so, you must learn about the area.
1. What is the name for the area around the Pacific Ocean where 50% of all volcanic activity is located?
2. What is the cause for all of this activity in this area?
3. What line of longitude runs through the center of this area of volcanic activity? In the center of this line is where you will find your island.
Now we must become experts as quickly as possible on the types of volcanoes. On this island there are three out of the four types of volcanoes. To move forward, you must answer the following questions:
4. Can you name the 4 types of volcanoes and briefly describe their unique shape?
5. Which is the most active of all 4 types? This is where your great ancestor would have hidden the treasure.
6. What is the difference between an active volcano, and a dormant one?
This volcano is starting to look active, so we better work quickly!!!
Your final clue is a tricky one. The Treasure will be buried to the left of the volcano. You are looking for a skull and crossbones made out of a certain type of volcanic rock. Hint: It's a very Porous rock!!!!
7. What type of rock is this, and what does it look like?
