Task

1.

Atkins uses famous people to advertise through television and internet advertisements, and by having their pictures on the packaging and posters/billboards. Sometimes they use experts on health to show why the diet is good for you and can help you lose weight

The Sleeping Beauty diet has been advertised on television and in magazines. You are meant to have 7-9 hours sleep a night. Some people use this diet but promote using sleeping tablets and drugs to get to sleep, which isn't advertised on television, but there are blogs that write articles about this.

The Fletcherism Diet is another old diet that was advertised through Horace Fletcher's lectures and by some famous people at the time trying his diet. He also wrote books about this diet, and other health ideas he believed.

This is an advertisement for a Atkins. It shows the lady looking skinny and happy, which some people may think could happen to them.

This is the cover of one of Horace Fletcher's books on Fletcherism that is available on Amazon.

3.

The Atkins advertisements may be successful because people want to lose weight and look good to friends and family. The celebrities show in advertisements how the product helped them lose weight, which makes people think they could look like them if they follow the diet too. People are also lazy sometimes and want to believe a product could make them lose weight without extra exercise.

The Sleeping beauty diet advertising may be successful as people don't have to buy expensive food or drinks. Lots of people use sleeping tablets too, so they would feel like they could start right away. It also seems very lazy so more people might do it.

The Fletcherism diet advertising would have been effective at the time as they didn't have the internet to do lots of research. Also because Horace Fletcher said the diet worked on him, people would have likely believed him. It also didn't cost them extra money as they just had to chew their food a lot.

4.

Sometimes the Atkins advertisements wouldn’t work because some people are not able to afford the diet foods, which can’t be changed even with good advertising. Also, some people may research it on the internet after seeing it advertised and realise that it might not work as well as the advertising was saying, or that they may have to exercise as well to get the results, which they might not want to do.

The Sleeping beauty diet advertisements may not be effective if people are very busy. Some people may not be able to get that much sleep, and they may not want to take tablets. Night shift workers might find it hard to follow this diet too.

The Fletcherism diet advertising may not have worked when people read about it and realised they would have to chew their food until it was liquid. Lots of people would think this was gross and wouldn't want to try it either.

5.

Out of The Atkins Diet, The Sleeping Beauty Diet, and The Fletcherism Diet, I would be most likely to try the Atkins Diet because I would still get to eat foods that I like such as bacon, sausages and eggs. They also have Atkins chocolate bars and shakes which would make it feel like you’re eating some normal foods too.

6.

I would be least likely to try The Fletcherism diet because I think it would be disgusting chewing food 32 times to turn it to liquid, and I think it’s weird to poo only once every couple weeks and it not smell at all.

7.

     1. The Atkins Diet can result in bad breath, Tiredness, Weakness, Dizziness, Insomnia and Nausea.

     2. The Cabbage Soup Diet results in starvation, Fatigue, Flatulence, Faintness, Moodiness, Frequent             Urination.

     3. The Sleeping Beauty Diet can result in over exercising which may result in death.

     4. The Fletcherism Diet results in pooing only once every two weeks.

     5. The Master Cleanse Diet results in, Dizziness, Nausea, Dehydration and Fatigue.

Evaluation

The first fad in the video was "sun addicts". There were two ladies who were addicted to tanning beds. Their skin was very brown and they had a doctor who was a plastic surgeon and fixed issues from people over tanning. They showed images of people who had large open wounds on their faces that the doctor had to fix. He said that they were even bigger under the skin, and sometimes he would have to open half their face to fix them. Tanning can lead to skin cancer and getting wrinkles earlier than normal. Teenagers and younger people are most likely to tan a lot as they see that on television and the magazines the most popular people are tanned. An interesting fact is that people who feel like they have to tan all the time are called Tanarexics. Also, apart from skin cancer, tanning beds that you lay on can have some really gross germs on them causing staph infections and even herpes.

The other fad in the video was 'phentermine' for weight loss. This is a weight loss pill that a doctor prescribes. Usually it's only people who are overweight who can get them. Phentermine is a drug similar to ecstasy, and it works by suppressing your appetite and giving you lots of energy. People taking it can have trouble sleeping, moods swings, depression, heart palpitations, headaches and dizziness. People can also get addicted to it. Interestingly, people who do horse racing and boxing professionally are not allowed to take phentermine as it's banned. Because it helps people lose weight, and horse racing and boxing have different weights the athletes have to be, this would give them an advantage, which is why it's not allowed. In June 2017 year jockey Michelle Payne was banned from riding for a month because she tested positive to phentermine.

Conclusion

During this assignment I learnt that some diets are very expensive, and that some diets may make you look skinny on the outside, but they always have side effects, and may affect your health badly on the inside. Some of these side effects can be nausea, diarrhea, dizziness, and mood swings etc. This assignment also taught me that average people aren't the only ones that are trying fad diets, but celebrities are doing these diets too. They might try and get to a certain weight that they think looks good, or to get ready for a role in a movie. So fad diets really affect everyone and it shows we all try to take short cuts sometimes.

The reason that fad diets make so much money, and people try them, is because most people don't like to work hard for the results, and want to take a short cut. Companies know this and know that if they promise lots of weight loss fast, that people will buy their product. Celebrities also make a lot of money from fad diets by appearing in their advertisements and on packaging, which can help the companies make more money as people want to look like celebrities, and think that they have to be skinny to be good looking, liked, and happy.

I don't think that all diets are bad if they include healthy food and exercise, or restricting things like sugar and processed foods. If I were to create a diet it would be something you could do for a long time and I would make sure you had to exercise too as that helps you be healthy inside and out. I have made a weekly list of what my diet and workout would look like. I think that you wouldn't lose weight very fast following my plan, but you would lose a lot over a long amount of time and then you wouldn't put it all back on later. If people ate healthy and exercised, then they wouldn't have to go on fad diets in the first place.
