Introduction
This webquest will introduce you to some of the operational, managerial, and legal aspects of opening a new restaurant. The information you discover throughout your research will be used to draft your response to paragraphs 3 and 4: The Legal Environment of Your Business.
Remember, although it is acceptable to provide a bulleted list of the licensures, insurance, and regulatory requirements, you must explain why each of these is necessary. Some of the requirements are mandated by law and therefore cannot be overlooked.
Task
You will use the websites and resources throughout this webquest to answer the questions contained under each heading. It would be wise to transcribe your responses onto the packet provided to you. After you have finished gathering information, use your notes to draft two paragraphs (explained below.) Be sure to include an asterisk (*) where an in-text citation is required in your writing. You can go back later and add the citations to your work.
- PARAGRAPH 1: Describe the licenses and permits a new business (specifically a restaurant) must obtain before opening to the public
- List each item
- Define its purpose
- Explain how a business would apply for it (office, agency, online portal, etc.)
- PARAGRAPH 2: Describe the insurance coverage a restaurant must carry
- List the insurance name or type of policy
- Explain what the coverage is intended to protect
- Identify the consequences to the business of being uninsured or under-insured
Process
Section 1: Federal and State Licensing and Permits
-
What is a business license and where can one be obtained for an operation in Maryland?
-
How does a new business apply for a license?
-
Is the license valid forever, or must it be renewed periodically?
-
What is an Employer Identification Number and what is its purpose?
Section 2: Local Licensing and Permits
-
In addition to federal and state documentation, what does Harford County require for a foodservice operation to do business?
Section 3: Insurance Coverage for Foodservice Operations
-
What types of insurance policies should a restaurant carry? What does each type of insurance protect?
-
Indicate which types of insurance are mandatory and which types (if any) are not required for a business to carry.
-
What are the potential outcomes to a restaurant that does not maintain adequate insurance coverage?
-
What kind of accidents, injuries, or situations are most likely to occur in your business?
Evaluation
Once you have completed your research and gathered sufficient data, compare your findings with someone else at your table.
Next, write a rough draft of the two paragraphs defined under the "Task" tab. Type your rough draft and print one copy - be sure to include your name on your paper!
You will then ask a classmate to proofread your work; they will evaluate your paragraphs for content quality using the checklist provided in your packet. You will proofread someone else's work and make notations for revision on their paper.
Conclusion
Use the feedback from your peer edit to revise your paragraphs.
Print your work and turn it in for a grade; please make sure your name is on your paper!
(Don't forget to use an asterisk (*) to mark where your citations are needed. A complete list of sources is available under the "Credits" tab, as well as on the class Edline page. You do not need to include a works cited page for this assignment.)
