Task
Students will research specific time periods and areas of schooling in Australia with the final focus being on comparing and contrasting these conditions withe form, style and extent of schooling in Australia in 2018.
Process
Our history will be divided into chunks of time such as 1940- 1950s;1950s- 1960s;1970s to 1980s ;1990s to 2000; 2001- to today. Teacher directed. Then students to be placed in groups of 4 and allocated a time period to web research.
As a class, on whiteboard mind map the different areas of schooling and from the following created list students in each group chose one big area to research and become their group's expert . Results need to be recorded in a 10 slide PowerPoint with labelled illustrations, ready to discuss and display to the whole class.
Areas for selection: region/access;type of school- secular or religious, size, ideology; subjects taught- what variety and how taught;teachers- type and qualifications; average sizes of classes to number of teachers;morning assemblies; equipment in the classroom and furnishings; readers; methods of control; co curricular activities; play pursuits and play equipment; forms transport to and from school; literacy and numeracy rates; retention rates; the gender divide - eg when n the boys were often removed from Year 4 to attend an an all boy school; the difference in subjects available to boys and girls; ;certificates awarded for excellence in learning, effort given and school spirit;Sporting Houses and sports played; pathways after school- vocations, professions,apprenticehips and other occupations.

Criteria are as follows:
- effort - evidence all tried really hard and contributed their best
- attempt at thoroughness - giving supporting evidence for claims
- clear level of understanding
- referencing to facts
- supporting relevant images
- expression which is clear, precise and thoughtful
- 10 slides - 1 being a title page and the last being the page of acknowledgements of contributors
Conclusion
As a class view the group Power Points and discuss what we find interesting and intriguing about a period and how this contrasts with our experiences today.
