Introduction
| 1. Doing Gluten-Free Without a good reason. |
Pretending to be gluten free will not actually help you use weight. This is another health fad that’s totally unnecessary and unhealthy. livestrong.com says: “Risks of needlessly going gluten-free include nutrient deficiencies, constipation and a weakened immune system caused by a lack of helpful bacteria in your gut. If you believe you have gluten intolerance, seek guidance from your doctor.” |

| 2. Colonics |
For many years celebrities have been doing colonial hydrotherapy. They claim it’s a great way to flatten your tummy, reduce toxins from your body and reduce bloat. This is not true and not that safe either. If the water pressure is too high, colonics can cause perforated bowels that can lead to dangerous infections as well as stripping your gut of the healthy bacteria inside. |

3. Sweating Off Pounds in Plastic |
Sweating Off Pounds In Plastic? Yes it’s true. People do wrap themselves in cling wrap because they think it helps them loose pounds. Well it turns out this crazy health fad is VERY unhealthy. By doing this you’re actually loosing fluids not fat. This also causes weakness, dizziness, confusion, coma and potentially death. Apparently you can experience complications mid workout such as your skin not being able to breathe or sweat. |

| 4. Oxygen Cans |
Simon Cowell recently rocked up to the red carpet with a few cans of inhalable oxygen. He states that it gives him a youthful glow and helps him manage stress, helps him when he’s fatigue and even stops him from the urge to smoke! As good as it sounds, unfortunately, it’s not true. Dr Brar even says it could be dangerous. “Oxygen, while essential to life, can be toxic in excessive doses, where it can actually cause cell damage. More is not always better.” He said |

| 5. The purple diet | Mariah Carey recently declared she was taking on ‘The Purple Diet.’ The Purple Diet is a diet where you only eat purple foods such as cabbage, plums, grapes, ect. It’s not entirely a bad idea, purple foods are usually very healthy. The catch is that consuming only purple foods would mean you’re missing out on other proteins and foods. So it is safe? Well let’s see what Dr Brar has to say about this. “Anything done in extremes is not good and will find you dificient in other areas overtime.” He says. So it is safe but not the best thing to do. Have you ever tried any of these fads? If so, what were the results? |

Answer the following questions IN FULLSENTENCES for EACH of the 3 fads you selected:
- .
- Find an example advertisement for one of the fads and insert into this worksheet
- Explain why you think the promotion/marketing of these fads would be unsuccessful Because if people do research they can easily find out the truth.
- Explain why you think the promotion/marketing of these fads would be successful because if people see their favourite celebrity is doing it, they’ll want to do it to.
- Which of the 3 fads you selected would you be most likely to try and WHY? The Purple diet because even if it bad for you I wouldn’t do it for that long and I could give myself a chance to become super healthy and by doing this I would definitely appreciate the unhealthy foods more.
- Which of the 3 fads would you be least likely to try and WHY? Oxygen cans because they’d be a waste of money and time. Why use oxygen in a can when you can just breathe natural air. There is enough oxygen in the world, we don’t need to stuff it in a can and sell it.
- What are the negative side effects for each
Oxygen Cans: Oxygen overdose can be toxic.
Purple Diet and Fake Gluten Free: Not getting enough protein from other foods.
Colonics: Strips all the healthy bacteria from your gut

Evaluation
After watching ‘The Phill Show,’ I have gathered some information. The people on the show were victims of health fads and were constantly doing them. The types of fads on the show was sun tanning and using pills to make you skinnier. The people who usually want to do tanning fads are people who are really light skinned or people who just want to get tanned for a better appearance. The people who use the pills are usually people who are overweight or people who just want to get skinnier for a better appearance. Though these fads may make you look better, the side effects are pretty brutal. With the tanning fad, you can get sun cancer which eventually leads to having to get parts of your body cut out and then getting plastic surgery on the place where you got the cancer cut out. Not only is this a big deal but this also uses up a lot of your money. With the pills, you get pretty bad side effects a well. You are constantly nauseous and dizzy as well as mood swings and much more. I’ve found there is no such thing as health fads just fads that people think make you healthy.
Conclusion
Because of all this research, I’ve learned that if not all, most of the health fads are fake and totally unhealthy. People try them because they want to be healthy, loose weight, be like their favourite celebrity or just because they want to be trendy. Bit actually, by doing health fads, you will most likely end up being unhealthy and miserable. Companies often try to persuade you with buying products by using popular celebrities for their ads. They also get the celebrities to believe that this is healthy which leads them to tweeting and instagramming it. This makes the fans wanting to do it even more. The fans then believe it and tell all their friends and their friends end up doing it because they want to be trendy and support the friend that told them. Personally, I think that health fads are a waste of time and it would be much healthier to have a balanced diet food wise. Doctors say that it is healthier to have a rainbow meal everyday. A rainbow meal is where you eat a rainbow everyday. Example:
Red-Strawberries
Orange-Capcicum
Yellow-Banana
Green-Kale
Blue-Blueberries
Purple-Blackberries
You don’t have to do these exact foods this is just an example. When doing this, make sure not to eat only a rainbow, make sure to eat other foods too. If you want to lose weight, instead of getting colonics or other crazy fads, avoid eating these foods: Orange Juice, Margerine, Bad Quality Meat and Products that tell you you’ll loose weight if you use them. These products that say you’ll loose weight do work but as soon as you eat normally again, you’ll pick up more weight than what you lost. Health Fads really are unhealthy and if you’re thinking of going on a diet or something, talk to a professional about how you should go.
