Introduction
5 health fads
1-Meat free foods: to increase plant type foods in your diet & to help save the planet as there will not be enough animals to supply the people of the world and their demand for meat!
2 Juicing: juicing is when you juice vegetables or fruit into juice using a juicer - but it also leaves out a lot of fibre and nutrients that are in whole fruits.
3- Boxing: a popular sport that's on the rise, it combines cardio and strength.
4- Sugar Detoxing: (new version of quitting carbs), eating too much sugar is a major risk factor for heart disease.
5- Extreme fasting: going to extreme measures to lose weight eg eating normally for 5 days and limiting food for 2 days.
6- Coconut Oil: it is a new food fad but it is loaded with unhealthy fats!
Task
1. How is each fad promoted/marketed?
- Coconut Oil is currently being promoted on the internet, TV talk shows and being endorsed by celebrities as a healthy type of oil that has benefits such as better health.
- Boxing is even an olympic sport and almost every gym offers Boxing type classes to lose weight, get fit etc It can be advertised everywhere to gain people's attention to become healthy such as on TV, the internet, magazines, buses, billboards, in sports shops etc.
- Juicing - is being promoted and marketed by 'juice type takeaway shops' such as "Boost Juice" which are found in malls, high streets, hospitals and airports etc. People love the taste of the sweet juice and think that it is a healthy choice because fruit is considered healthy.
2. Find an example advertisement for one of the fads and insert into this worksheet

3. Explain why you think the promotion/marketing of these fads would be successful
- People like to try/believe that if celebrities are trying new foods and say that they have health benefits then it must be true! This is what is happening with coconut oil or any coconut related food products for example.
- Boxing - Any advertisements that show a person getting in shape, losing weight, having good health benefits from boxing and maybe if you join a gym to do boxing for a low price will encourage people to give it a go.
- Juicing - Anything that is shown as being healthy will attract the attention of people. People think fruit is healthy to eat and so if it is in a juice that is easy to drink and can even be a meal it will be successful.
4. Explain why you think the promotion/marketing of these fads would be unsuccessful
- Coconut Oil - Because once people spend time researching this food they may find it also has some risks such as diarrhea because it can destroy good bacteria in your gut, can cause allergies, and weight gain because of the high levels of saturated fat.
- Boxing - a reason might be because people could get hurt and some people don,t like the violence associated with boxing.
- Juicing - this would not be successful if people read the food label/ingredient label which shows what is in the drink and the nutrition content especially the amount of sugar.
5. Which of the 3 fads you selected would you be most likely to try and WHY?
- Juicing - I love the sweet taste of juice especially when it is hot and the juice has crushed iced added, this makes it sweet and cold. You also get to choose all sorts of flavors such as strawberry, orange, apple, watermelon etc.
6. Which of the 3 fads would you be least likely to try and WHY?
- Boxing is not a fad that I would like to try because of the violence that it could promote and the danger involved with getting injured.
7. What are the negative side effects for each?
- Coconut Oil - some people might have an allergic reaction to coconut oil such as nausea, rashes and vomiting etc.
- Boxing - this sport involves at times being hit in the head which can cause fractures to the bones of the skull and face, as well as damage to the brain.
- Juicing - if you only use fruit for juicing instead of vegetables you will not get the benefits of good nutrients and mainly only sugar which can cause weight gain and tooth decay. It is far better to eat a whole piece of fruit rather than juicing it.

Boxing Injuries......
- James Murray - born on the 7 of December 1969 in Scotland. He died on the 13 of October 1995 (aged 25) after he collapsed in the final round of a boxing match, he was taken to hospital and sadly died the next day.
- Tim Hague - born on the 9th of May 1983 in Edmonton, Alberta. He was 34 years old when he died after suffering a brain bleed when he was knocked unconscious in a boxing match.
- Mike Towell - born on the 12th of September 1991, he suffered head injuries in he 5th round of a boxing matching and unfortunately died the next day at the age of 25!
- Jimmy Garcia - born on October the 12th 1971, he was 23 years old when he died on the 19th of May when he was only 23 years old, it was 13 days following his boxing match that he died from brain damage.
Evaluation
1.Tanning: the side effects of doing this is skin cancer. People have a view that if they have tanned skin they will look better rather than being safe and ensuring they don't get skin cancer. The two main ways that people 'tan' are to use a machine called a 'Tanning Bed'which use machinery to create effects of what the sun would do to tan your skin and secondly when people purposefully lie in the sun without any sun protection such as proper sun block to protect their skin. Maybe a safer way to get a tanned look if that is what will make you feel better is to have a fake tan using a spray/lotion which sort of dyes your skin to make it look darker. Fake tanning is one of the fastest growing fads and throughout history the most desirable skin shades have changed, but in today's society achieving the perfect 'bronzed' skin colour is thought to be a way to be attractive. It is important that people understand and are aware as per The World Health Organisation that if you use a tanning device before the age of 30 you are 75% more likely to develop melanoma (skin cancer).
2.Phentermine: this is a type of pill that you can take that will help you lose weight fast. Again people get an idea that they have to look a certain way and they try to lose weight quickly and with the least amount of effort so they take these pills to achieve this. These weight loss pills have numerous side effects such as heart beats faster than usual, moodiness, nausea, headache, dizziness. Although initially people may lose weight quickly after a while the weight loss slows and it becomes difficult to lose weight. People may not know that in order for this pill to work well it is important to exercise too.

In conclusion by doing this task and finding out information about health fads I have learnt that even if the health fad sounds like it will work because you see an advert for it or maybe that a celebrity is doing the fad that it might infact be dangerous for your body. I have enjoyed finding out more information about each health fad such as what the benefits might be but more about what the side effects are.
Because big Companies have a lot of money that they can spend on advertising their products to encourage people to try it or buy it, they often can pay lots of money to celebrities to endorse their product. People seem to have a fascination with celebrities and will believe almost anything they say so if they see a celebrity talking about or advertising on Instagram or any other social media that a product can have good health benefits people will believe it rather than doing their own research. There may be no truth to what is being advertised. Some companies also offer free trials of their products to try to entice people to try them, this tricks people into thinking that because they are getting some free stuff it must be a good product and then they may eventually end up buying the product.
I think a better and safer strategy for having healthy outcomes over a long term period is really about balancing the type of foods you eat and the amount of exercise you do. Eating a healthy balanced diet such as lots of fresh vegetables, fresh fruit, carbohydrates like grain bread and sweet potatoes, and protein such as lean meat and fish. You should limit the amount of processed foods you eat, takeaway food, food high in saturated fat, and high sugar content foods like chocolate, biscuits, cakes, juice and soft drinks. Being active in your lifestyle is important too and if there are certain sports and activities that you like to do then you are more likely to keep doing these on a regular basis and make them part of your lifestyle maybe surfing, riding your bicycle, swimming, playing oz tag, walking your dog etc.
