Introduction
You have entered a time machine that has sent you 50 years in to the future. The air around you is a brown, thick fog. Rubbish floods the area which you are standing. You see a huge pile of rubbish and climb to the top. At the top, you see no grass, you see no animals, you see no trees; only rubbish.
To safely return back to 2018, you must complete the following quests and learn about recycling and waste management in order to save the planet for future generations!
Task
Your mission is to create a poster board which you will share with your school about waste management strategies. You will present your poster board at a school assembly and encourage your peers to reduce, reuse and recycle! Remember, time is running out!
Some interesting things you may include on your posterboard could be:
-Recyclable and non recyclable items
- How to be more sustainable at home
- Why waste management is so important for the future?
Process
Mission 1: Big Ideas
Using whiteboards, write down any thoughts, feelings, emotions or information that comes to your mind when you read the following questions:
- When you see rubbish on the ground, how does it make you feel?
- Have you ever thought about where that rubbish ends up?
- Do you know what happens when you mix rubbish in the incorrect bin?
- What do you think will happen to the world if people continue littering and don't care about where their rubbish goes?
Mission 2:
How many bins do you have at your home? Do you know which items go in which bin? Discuss this with your group. Do they put the same items in the same bins as you? Then watch this video to see if you've been doing it right or maybe you'll learn something new!
Mission 3:
Choose your character and help clean up the Murray River! The more rubbish you get the more points you will earn. Remember to read the information at each checkpoint to answer the questions at the end!
Mission:
Your next challenge in becoming an expert in waste management, is to watch this video. After watching, your teacher will give you a piece of butchers paper with the headings "Connect, Expand, Challenge'.
Under connect, write about what you already knew about rubbish in the ocean before you watched the video
Under Expand, write about what you might have known a bit about but now understand more about it. For example, you might have known there was lots of rubbish in the ocean, but maybe you didnt know about the Great Pacific Garbage Patch.
Under Challenge, write about something you might not understand, or would like to find out more about.
Mission 4:
You're doing great! Remember to keep writing down interesting facts for your poster board.
For your fourth mission, complete two of the fun mini-games in the link below:

Mission 5:
With your fellow timetravellers, choose ONE challenge from the following:
OPTION 1:
Create new bin labels for the different bins around your school e.g. rubbish, bottles, compost, recycling! Do this by using A3 or A4 paper and coloured markers. Get your teacher to laminate your labels so you can stick them on the bin.
OPTION 2:
Using Microsoft Word, create new bin labels. Use exciting colours and pictures to make sure people know which bin to put their waste in! Get your teacher to laminate your labels so you can stick them on the bin.

Mission 6:
Now that you have a better understanding of what can be recycled, go into the playground and pick up some rubbish. When you get back to the classroom, separate your piles into recyclable and non recyclable. From here, create two masterpieces out of the rubbish. Use your imagination!

Mission 7:
Now that you have great knowledge and information to share with your entire school, start creating your poster board however you would like. It is up to you how you present your findings and encourage your school to use better waste management practices. If you are successful, you will be returned back to 2018, where you can warn everyone about the harsh consequences the world will face if we don't start simply putting rubbish in the right bin.
