Marbleizing Paper

Introduction

Marble rock is a cool thing to look at and an even cooler thing to recreate. In this lesson students will have fun while recreating the look of a marbleized rock using common house hold items such as, paint, liquid starch, water, and paper!

Task

You will need 6 empty paint bottles, a tub large enough to hold a gallon of liquid starch, a gallon of liquid starch, acrylic paints, any colors you want, weighted paper, and a hair pick (optional).

Pour the starch into the tub and put some paint into the starch, place the paper on top and then... TADA! you have made a marbleized paper.

Process

  1. Pour the entire gallon of liquid starch into the tub
  2. In the empty bottles put 2 parts paint and one part water, and shake until fully mixed
  3. Splash the paint and water mixture onto the starch any way you want to make the style you are looking for
  4. (optional) use the hair pick to move the paint around to make it the image you have been working for
  5. Place the weighted paper flat on top of the paint and push down all corners to make sure the paper is covered
  6. Take paper off and allow to dry
