Introduction
We are going to Brookfield Zoo! Before we go, lets learn about some of the animals at the zoo.
Task
The emerging ELL students will be able to identify and say the name of some zoo animals in English before going on the field trip to the zoo. In this quest students will be placed in small groups of three or four students. The students do research on a zoo animal assigned by the teacher.
Process
1. Teacher will assign the groups one of the following animals: polar bear, gorilla, tiger, giraffe, cheetah, elephant, and sea lion.
2. Your group will locate pictures of your zoo animal and describe their features..
3. Your group will research your animal on the National Geographic kids website, the Brookfield Zoo website, and the Lincoln Park Zoo website.
4. Your group will watch a video of your animal from the Discovery Channel.
5. Your group will use all the information to create a poster to present to the class.
Evaluation
Students are provided a rubric by which the poster board and presentation will be evaluated based on team work and completion.
Conclusion
Today you collaborated with your group on an animal safari. You shared such great information with all of your classmates with your poster boards. Now you are masters of your zoo animal. Next stop...the Brookfield Zoo!
Poster boards will be posted throughout the classroom allowing all the students to see and study the board for one week prior to going Brookfield zoo.
