INTRODUCTION

You are a group of allergists working at the same hospital. You have decided to organize a one-day workshop on "Allergies in our Everyday Lives: Symptoms, Diagnosis and Treatment". The Workshop is addressed to people who suffer from allergies, parents with allergic children and anyone interested in allergies. The following issues will be covered during the workshop: 1) Food Allergies, 2) Respiratory allergies (allergic rhinitis) and 3) Eye allergies. The main objectives of the workshop are a) to inform people on different types of allergies and b) to provide them with tips and suggestions which will enable them to deal with their allergies more effectively on a daily basis.

TASK

Learners are required to prepare three thematic presentations for the one-day workshop entitled "Allergies in our Everyday Lives: Symptoms, Diagnosis and Treatment". The presentations will revolve around the following three topics: Food Allergies, Respiratory Allergies and Eye Allergies. For the purposes of the preparation as well as the presentation of the aforementioned topics, Powerpoint and/or Prezi can be used. In addition, the learners will compile a brochure which will be distributed to all attendees. The brochure will include invaluable information on each type of allergy discussed throughout the workshop and provide useful tips and suggestions on how to prevent allergies. More specifically, it will focus on how we can avoid allergic symptoms as well as how to deal with them when they make their appearance. The overall aim of the brochure is to make the lives of patients and their relatives easier.

PROCESS

  1. You will be divided into three groups. Each group will consist of four members and will be assigned one thematic area.
  2. Using the online resources provided below, each group will make a research and extract information related to the assigned topic.
  3. Each group prepares a presentation on their topic. Focus on the following questions which will guide your presentations: A) Which are the symptoms of food/ respiratory/eye allergies? B) How can people prevent these kinds of allergies? and C) On a daily basis, how can people deal with allergies? Drawing on the links provided in the Resources Section, learners should get acquainted with different types of allergies. You can start by looking at these websites:http://www.eaaci.org, http://acaai.org,  http://www.aaaai.org, and http://www.worldallergy.org, which can provide you with general background information on allergies.
  4. The first group will be concerned with food allergies. Go to the website https://www.foodallergy.org  and retrieve information on the types of food allergies. Name some of the food which can trigger allergic reactions and create a brief and concise outline of food allergies symptoms. You can also use the link https://www.allergicliving.com/category/food-allergy in order to extract additional information on food allergies. Finally, go to section https://www.foodallergy.org/life-with-food-allergies/epinephrine/how-to-use-an-epinephrine-auto-injector and provide guidelines on how to administer the epinephrine auto-injector to prevent an allergic shock.
  5. The second group will become familiarized with respiratory allergies. In particular, you need to access the online resources provided by http://www.facingallergies.com/respiratory-allergies-the-basics and collect information on the symptoms of respiratory allergies.  Taking allergic rhinitis as the main type of respiratory allergies, describe its symptoms. Based on the link http://www.facingallergies.com/what-solutions/allergy-immunotherapy-desensitisation , refer to the benefits of immunotherapy as a treatment for respiratory allergies.
  6. The third group will make a research on eye allergies. The website of the American Academy of Ophthalmology https://www.aao.org will serve as your primary source of information on the definition, symptoms and treatment of eye allergies.
  7. All groups will proceed to analyze and compile the information they have acquired in order to prepare their presentations. You can use either Powerpoint or Prezi for your presentations.
  8. The last step includes the compilation of this information into an informative brochure which will serve as a guide for allergic people and those around them.

CONCLUSION

Upon completion of the task learners will have implicitly acquired new vocabulary items and medical terminology related to the thematic area of allergies.
