Ready, Set, Respect!

Task

Think about our world, city, school, and classroom.  They are full of different people.  This webquest will teach us about appreciating everyone in our world.  It will make us think about how we treat people and how we talk to people.

You will need a response packet and a pencil.  Read and follow the directions at each step.

Keep the response packet in your Science Journal. This will take a few days to complete.

Process

Step 1: NAMES

See the source image

Think about the following questions and write your thoughts in box 1.A.

Do you know why your name was chosen to be your name?

What do you especially like about your name?

Do you have any nicknames that you like to be called?

If you don't know much about your name, tonight ask someone at home if they know why your name was chosen.

Think about the next 3 questions and write your thoughts in box 1.B.

If we all have names, why do we sometimes call each other different names?

Can you remember a time when someone called you the wrong name or called you by a nickname that you did not like of that was said to you in a teasing way?

How did that make you feel and what did you do?

STEP 2:  SURVEY

Click on the link below to take a survey.

A survey is NOT a test.

STEP 3:  STRIPES

Read and Listen to A Bad Case of Stripes by David Shannon.

You may follow along with Ms. Jenkins' book if it's available.

Click on the link below to hear Nana read the book.

When you are done, complete the graphic organizer.

Step 4: Get together with 2 or 3 other students.  Discuss these three stories and write your ideas on the response sheet.

Scene 1:  At the end of the day everyone is lining up in the hallway and a few girls whisper hurtful remarks about the clothes of another girl.  You and the girl they are whispering about hear the comments.

Scene 2: At lunch, a girl trips and drops her tray as she is walking to the lunch table.  Many students laugh and call her a "retard".  You are sitting very close to where the girl falls and also next to the kids calling her names.

Scene 3: In class, your reading group is reading a story of a small boy who wants to be a professional basketball player.  A couple of students laugh and tell a boy in your group, who is also smaller than most other students, that the story is about him- and he couldn't make the team either and maybe he should join the circus instead.

Step 5: Win-Win

Watch the video below to learn about how to Think Win-Win

Talk to a friend about the video.

What does Lily learn about?

What do you think it means to "Think Win-Win"?

Now watch this video.

Talk to a friend about this video.

What lesson can we learn from both videos?

Write your definition of "Think Win-Win" on the response sheet.  Use Ms. Jenkins' book if you need a little help.

STEP 6: Diversity

Watch this 30-second video

STEP 7: Friends

Talk about these questions with a friend.

How do you make new friends?

What do you do when a new student joins our class?

Watch the video and pay attention to Kid President's list.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OoHdwUEfBts

When you are done, refer to the response sheet to create your own list for making friends.

Conclusion

Is your response packet complete?

Have we had our class discussion?

If the answer to both questions is yes, then it's time to begin our final step.

Make a poster that celebrates diversity and discourages bullying.

The topic of the poster is:

WHY IS IT IMPORTANT TO INCLUDE EVERYONE?

Think about everything we have talked about and decide what you think is important.

You may work with 1 or 2 other students or you may work alone.

Check the Science Board for the presentation dates.
