Thanksgiving Scavenger Hunt

Introduction

Why? Since Thanksgiving is this week, we're going to do a Thanksgiving scavenger hunt. The purpose of this activity is to learn some facts you might not have known about Thanksgiving using various internet sources and then using this sources to write a short (key word being short) Thanksgiving article.

Guiding question: What traditions in this picture might not have been historically accurate? After thinking about this question, click on to the Task tab.

Task

Who? You may work with a partner or by yourself during this Webquest, HOWEVER, both members must take turns looking up information or the partnership will be split up and each will work independently.

What? Using the internet, you will find the information to answer at least 2 questions on a Thanksgiving Webquest document. Make sure to NOT ONLY write down the answers to the questions, but the source where you found the information and the author, as well.

Process

Where? Located in a folder title "Thanksgiving Webquest" in our Journalism folder, you will find a document also entitled "Thanksgiving Webquest."

NOTE: You MUST make a copy of this original document and change the name of your document to your name or the name of the people in your group. (Example: Rick and Ginnie's Webquest)

When? After you have finished answering 2 questions and have added the sources to your Thanksgiving Webquest document, make sure your document is located in the "Thanksgiving Webquest" folder so you can get credit for a participation and quiz grade.

Now you are ready for Step 2. Click on the Evaluation Tab.

Evaluation

Step 2 - Choose 1 item to write an article about:

  1. It could be a fact that you learned which contradicts a Thanksgiving tradition we now have.
  2. It could just be an interesting fact that you think other students might like to know about.
  3. It could be a question that caused you to dig deeper. Like I wondered while I was reading, why turkey is served on Thanksgiving today.
  4. You could have another reason for choosing what to write about. Remember I don't have all the ideas, you guys are great thinkers too! :)

Add this question or fact to the Step 2 - Thanksgiving Tradition/Fact document located in the Thanksgiving Webquest Folder. Fill in the appropriate information.

Conclusion

Step 3 - You are now ready to write your very short article. (5 - 10 sentences).

Using the information you researched, write an article answering the 5 W's. (Who, What, When, Where, Why)

Use this checklist to make sure you meet the specifications of this assignment:

  • I began my article with a topic sentence and by indenting the first sentence.
  • I cited at least one direct quote from at least 1 of my sources and made sure I put quotation marks around the information to let my readers this information was not my own.
  • My paragraph is focused and informative. I feel like my readers will walk away from my article more knowledgeable about the question or information I chose to discuss.
  • I ended my paragraph with a nice closing statement.

Make sure your article is moved to the Thanksgiving Article folder and you have added your name to the title of the document when you are finished and that your article has a creative title.

After your article is written, you are ready to click on the Credits tab.
