Grade Four - Language of Chances

Introduction

This web quest is designed for year four students to learn about the probability in three different areas:

1- Chance Order - impossible to certain

2- Chance - events related and unrelated

3- Chance - one cannot happen if the other happens

Students are surrounded by the probability of everyday events in different forms and shapes. Like the possibility of daily activities, least to most likely to occur, can or cannot happen and if the other one happens the chance of one event will not be affected by the occurrence of the other. All these situations students need to understand the meaning of the vocabulary to choose and predict the right answer and also use a logical reason of thinking with each sceniro to develop students mathmatic language.

Task

Image result for chances in mathThis WebQuest will help students to recognize the three concepts in probability within five sequence planned lessons using different math strategies. With each idea, we have various math activities as we have a lot of math words applied to an everyday life. They will learn in meaningful social interaction about the math vocabulary, the meaning, difference and compear between those words and how they can use these words logically and daily with confidence.

I hope the students will learn and engage in all activities to improve their understanding of math language.

Process

Welcome to the lesson one of our math trip in this Webquest. Before we start to work through the lessons, I need to check the prior knowledge of my students about probability. Therefore, I will begin with the below activity used before in a previous year. Then we will continue work through the rest lessons to achieve the outcomes which are understanding the concept of probability within different situations and choose the correct math vocabulary with each event.

Lesson 1 - Revision

Using smart board, to display the below activity and ask students to write the answer in their math book. Alex takes a circle from each box without looking.Which box gives Alex the best chance of taking a blue circle? Students compear the number of blue circles in each box.

Students watch youtube videos and hold their pencil to write point out some not understood words from the video. Some students were not yet sure about the math vocabulary, therefore, I will need to define first the meaning of probability and the words by applied different scenarios with each math words.

Lesson 2

In this experience, I will use open-ended tasks to investigate with my students the definition of the word probability to stimulate a range of positive mathematical behaviors between my students to create a social and collaborative atmosphere inside the class to engage all students to share and express their prior knowledge. Students are drawing on their existing mathematical understandings, knowledge, and skills to, analyzing the appropriateness of their approaches, checking results and asking 'what if …' questions to extend their learning. Therefore I will put my students in pairs, and I will make sure to put the students who they need support with the advanced student because students learn from each other smoothly as they work together. I will give 10 cents to each pair and give each student five chances to flip the coin, but before that, they need to predict what the chance it will land on heads is? This task will be suitable to encourage my students to investigate why their prediction was not accurate and at the same time is very challenging to them as they want to make their prediction correct. Students start to ask questions and explain their ideas to each other, and they tried to justify to me their work. After a class discussion about their wrong answer, I will give my students Ipad to look for the meaning of probability and write it in their math book. Using technological tools will encourage my students in the future if they want to learn about anything they can use different technology resource. Then I will explain to them the meaning of probability which is the measure of how likely something could happen in the future using words like Impossible, unlikely, even, likely and certain or we can use numbers. Then I will display the below image using smartboard as another technology resource to explain a lot of everyday examples including the coin activity and tries to put it in the below suitable place in the diagram.

Lesson 3

Chance Order - impossible to certain

Teachers use real events to connect the students with their world so students can learn math through their own experience. It is important that students come to view mathematics as a useful strategy to their life when they applied it in many and varied real contexts. Students' confidence and willingness to apply their mathematics to situations they encounter are enhanced through the regular use of real chances in their life. Therefore the examples should be from students previous experience.

Building investigations around real school sports day last year by display the school videos when students run for 700 m wearing different T-shirts colors. The cycle of probability investigation - posing a question to investigate; obtaining relevant summarising and then analyzing the results to answer the question about which team will be the winner of next week school sports day in running?

Prepare my students by display on the smartboard the below action and ask them to write their answer on the math book so I can assess my students understanding of the probability concept. There is one student (Jack) his answer was wrong therefore posing further questions, repeat the explanation of the meaning of probability and giving more relevant examples to the student will be my next priority.

Four girls, all wearing yellow shirts are racing. If all the girls finish the race, what is the chance that the winner is wearing a yellow shirt?

For jack, I will use different three math vocabulary as below and explain to him on by one the meaning of these words using examples from the surrounded environment like today the weather is cloudy ask a question about the of chance of rain today after he choose the answer from the diagram to ask him why he has chosen this answer to see if he can now understand the concept of probability. For the rest, students repeat the explanation about probability and use more examples as below to give opportunities to all students to keep practice this concept to be confidence.

Lesson 4

Chance - events related and unrelated

engaged in mathematical problem solving, using online collaborative learning environments

There are 2 red stars and 1 blue star in a bowl. Sam takes a star without looking, picking a red star. Next, Lisa takes a star without looking. What's the chance of Lisa picking a red star? (Hint: Sam and Lisa's chance event are related because Sam's event changes the chance of Lisa's event.)

One of the white sticks has a red tip. The aim is to take the stick that has a red tip. Ken chooses first - no red tip. Kelly chooses second - no red tip. Henry chooses third. What's the chance that Henry will choose the stick with the red tip?

The die is numbered from 1-6.

Lara rolls the die once, rolling a five.

On her second roll:

  •  Lara's chance of rolling a five again is improved.

  •  Lara's chance of rolling a five again is the same.

  •  Lara's chance of rolling a five again has decreased.

  •  Lara has no chance of rolling a five again.

There are 10 cards. 1 card has a picture of a star and the rest are blank. The aim of the game is to choose the star. Hilda chooses first. Her card is blank. She places the card out of the game. Adam chooses second. His card is blank. Who had the best chance of choosing the star?

  •  Hilda

  •  Adam

  •  They both had the same chance.

Chance - one cannot happen if the other happens
