Careers in Fashion

Introduction

Today, you will be researching careers in fashion. This assignment is built to help you better understand the opportunities available to you in this field while also cross-referencing them with your current interests.

In this Webquest, you will use multiple resources and complete assignments to help you explore this topic. This Fashion 101 course was created to give you a better idea about the fashion industry, so this Webquest will give you a better idea about what careers interest you before we dig deeper into them in class.

Task

To begin, you will write a two page paper about different careers in the fashion industry. I encourage you to visit multiple sources to explore different career options. Once you briefly describe a few that interest you, dig deeper into the one career that most intrigues you. You may want to explain geographically where this career is most popular, what companies offer it, salary, the career path to obtain this role, and what you are currently doing to help you gain this role.

A few popular resources include https://www.drapersjobs.com/article/top-10-careers-in-the-fashion-industry/ and https://www.fashion-schools.org/fashion-careers-1.

While I encourage you to explore careers that interest you the most, a few common careers include:

Buyer

Designer

Merchandiser

Magazine editor

Product manager

Showroom manager

Textile artist

Stylist

Fashion photographer

Make sure to cite any sources in a works cited page.

Process

To further delve into this career, conduct an interview with someone in this field and create a creative podcast or video of the interview. This person may be someone who works in that field or works in a similar field but knows about that career. If you are struggling to find someone, you may also interview someone who is in a position that holds similar responsibilities (a fashion designer may interview a graphic illustrator; a fashion editor may interview a sports editor). Contact me if you are unable to find anyone, and I will set you up with someone.

This portion is very important because you can get all of your questions on the career answered. I have had students get internship offers from the connections they made during this portion!

Some sample questions may include:

How did you get involved in this career?

Why did you choose this company?

What is your least favorite aspect of the job?

What is your favorite aspect of the job?

What does a typical day or week look like?

What other positions do you work closely with?

Next, you will prepare a three to five minute presentation for the class. You will discuss what you learned and any interesting aspects of the job. You will be presenting them next Thursday. Feel free to include mutli-media and a slideshow.
