Introduction
Welcome to your group task!
These activities will require you to work collaboratively (as a team), apply knowledge of area and measurement, and use problem solving and critical thinking skills to complete the task.
Good luck!
Task
In class we have talked about the rubbish problem at our school.
You will be presenting a proposal to Mr Quinlivan and Mr Burton on what section of the KCC grounds each Primary class should be responsible for.
You must complete each step in this Task, and work together as a team to decide on the best solution.
Process
STEP 1
Access a map of KCC. Our school grounds are used by both Primary and Secondary students. As a group, you need to work out what portion of the school grounds is classified as the 'Primary section'.
TASK: What is the estimated area of your proposed 'Primary section'?
STEP 2
In order to make things fair, you need to consider the number of students in each class.
TASK: You need to ascertain:
- How many Primary School classes do we have?
(Will you include the Kindy/Pre-Primary students, or just Years 1-6? You decide!)
- How many students are in each class?
(This may involve reasonable estimations, or extrapolation of data)
STEP 3
Now that you know the estimated area of the 'Primary section' and the number of students in each class, you need to decide what portion of the total 'Primary section' each class should be responsible for. This will be their section which they are responsible for, and must ensure it is clean and rubbish-free at all times.
Considerations:
- Will you give every class an equal-sized area of responsibility?
- Will you base the assigned area on the number of students in that class? For example, a class of 12 students may be assigned a smaller section than a class of 32 students.
- Will you give older students a greater area of responsibility as they are more able to make good choices and litter less?
- Do you think the younger students should have a greater area of responsibility so that they learn the importance of keeping our school tidy?
TASK: You need to think about your answers to the above. As a group write a short paragraph justifying your choices, and include a table on the portion/percentage that each Primary class will be responsible for.
An example of your table:
| Class | Number of students | Proposed area | Portion of total 'Primary section' |
| Eg. 5T | 32 | 30m2 | 9% |
Note: Your Portion of total 'Primary section' column should total 100%.
STEP 4
Return to your map of KCC.
TASK: As a group, you will need to mark out the area that each class will be responsible for. You should try to locate these as close to their classrooms as possible.
You may find that some sections may need to be adjusted so that they fit more sensibly on your map, as you will need students to clearly understand which section they are responsible for. For example, starting a section from the edge of a garden bed makes more sense than starting a section 27cm to the left of a garden bed. Therefore some classes may end up with more or less area than you originally proposed in STEP 3.
TASK: Include a table of your proposed sections.
An example of your table:
| Class | Final area | Vague description of area |
| Eg. 5T | 33m2 | Basketball court and surrounding garden |
STEP 5
Bonus task.
Now that you have assigned an area for each Primary class, go around the school and mark the location of rubbish bins onto your map.
In order to encourage students to easily manage their assigned area of responsibility, they will need to have easy access to rubbish facilities.
Are there enough rubbish bins to effectively service the area of each class? If not, you will need to add into your proposal a recommendation to relocate existing rubbish bins, or purchase additional rubbish bins.
Conclusion
Now that you have completed the Steps required for this Task, you must present your proposal.
It should include:
- A cover letter to Mr Quinlivan and Mr Burton outlining your proposal and recommended changes;
- The results of your Task, including your responses to each of the Steps in this Task and your completed map. Ensure you have included all information and that Mr Quinlivan and Mr Burton will know what it is referring to (use headings, explanations etc.).
