Properties of Polygons and Quadrilaterals

Introduction

Dear Student,

Today you will be completing a WebQuest on the properties of polygons and quadrilaterals. How much do you know already? We will be starting this WebQuest in class and it is to be completed by the beginning of tomorrow's class. Good luck!

Best,

Miss Marquez

Task

You will work through the three websites and answer the questions related. You have the opportunity to complete most of the assignment in class so use your time wisely. If you are able to answer the questions without visiting the website, that is okay, but please visit the website before asking for help.

Good luck!

Process

1. Students will first visit http://www.math.com/homeworkhelp/Geometry.html

           a) Define Polygon:

           b) Give (draw) 3 non-examples:

           c) Define Regular: (What is a regular polygon?)

           d) Complete the following chart:

           e) Give the term for a triangle that has the following side lengths and angles:

                      i) no equal sides

                      ii) 2 equal

                      iii) 3 equal

iv) one angle more than 90º

                      v) all angles under 90º

                      vi) all angles 60º

                      vii) one angle = 90º

2. Students will then visit http://www.mathsisfun.com/quadrilaterals.html

           a) For each of the quadrilaterals listed below, identify all the properties that they have from the given list:

Parallelogram        Rectangle        Rhombus         Square         Trapezoid       Isosceles Trapezoid      Kite

                      i) Both pair of opposite sides are parallel

ii) Only one pair of opposite sides are parallel

                      iii) No parallel sides

iv) Both pair of opposite sides equal

                      v) Only one pair of opposite sides are equal

vi) Both pair of opposite angles are equal

vii) Only one pair of opposite angles are equal

viii) All angles are right angles

ix) All four angles are equal

                      x) Diagonals bisect each other (meet at the midpoint)

xi) Diagonals bisect opposite angles (cut the angles in half)

                      xii)  Diagonals are perpendicular

                      xiii) Diagonals are equal

3.  Students will finally go to http://www.coolmath.com/reference/geometry-trigonometry-reference

         a) The sum of the angles in any quadrilaterals:

         b) The formula for area of a rectangle:

         c) The formula for area of a parallelogram:

         d) The formula for area of a trapezoid:
