Introduction
Grab a paper and a pencil! Today we will be learning about phonics in a new story!
Task
The student will produce a sheet of paper with all the words they didn't know with definitions and the prefixes, suffixes, vowel sounds and syllables.
Process
Below is a short story to read with new words. On a piece of paper you will write down any words the bold words, then you will underline the prefix or the suffix. Then you will identify all the vowel sounds and put slashes between every syllable. Then on https://www.merriam-webster.com/ you will look up the word and write the definition.
Do this for every new word, or words you have trouble reading and I will collect it.
The Lion & the Mouse
A Lion lay asleep in the forest, his great head resting on his paws. A little Mouse came upon him surprisingly, and in her fright to get away, ran across the Lion's nose. Awoken from his nap, the Lion laid his huge paw angrily on the tiny creature to kill her.
"Spare me!" begged the poor Mouse. "Please let me go and some day I will surely repay you."
The Lion was much amused to think that a Mouse could ever help him. But he was generous and finally let the Mouse go.
Some days later, while stalking his prey in the forest, the Lion was caught in a hunter's net. Unable to free himself, he filled the forest with his angry roaring. The Mouse knew the voice and quickly found the Lion struggling in the net. Running to one of the great ropes that bound him, she gnawed it until it broke, and soon the Lion was free.
"You laughed when I said I would repay you," said the Mouse. "Now you see that even a Mouse can help a Lion."
Evaluation
Throughout the Webquest I will be assisting with pronunciation of words, at the end of it I will collect their papers and evaluate where students are at with phonics and definitions and use it as a formative assessment.
Conclusion
Congratulations! You reached the end of your Webquest, now you will be able to identify the phonics in 9 new words!
