Task

Your job today will be to help plan a party for your third grade class. First you will need to show that you know the definition of a fraction. Then you will create and label many fractions. Next, you will need to find equivalent fractions to use in your recipes. Finally, you will need to add fractions together so that your recipes will feed the entire third grade class. Whew... sounds like alot to do so lets get started. Go to "Process" page to get specific directions.

1. First, each person will receive a partner or partners to work with. Each pair or trio will receive a fraction booklet.

Within each pair, you will need to decide who will take on the following roles:

recorder-This person will make sure all questions are answered and that everyone has given input.  Each person in the pair or group is responsible for recording the responses to each question.  

time keeper-This person will make sure everyone stays on-task and that no one spends longer than 5 minutes on each site.

Visit the following websites to complete each part of the booklet. you should visit and explore each site. Remember to spend no more than 5 minutes on each site. Allow each person in your group to have a turn playing each of the fraction games.

Part 2: Fruit

You will need to make a fruit and vegetable tray for the party.  There will be 18 people coming to the party.   After you have researched the internet links, complete these problems.

 

You have 2 cantaloupes to cut up for everyone.  Each cantaloupe serves 9 people if you divide it equally. 

  1. Draw each cantaloupe and how you would cut the pieces.  Label each piece with the fraction it was made into. 
  2. Then, write in a complete sentence what you would do to make sure the cantaloupes are divided equally.

     

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Part 3: Ice Cream!

Whew! It’s hot the day of the party! You are going to serve ice cream to cool everyone down.  Remember: you need to serve 18 people.

 

You can only buy the ice cream in quarts. You have enough money to buy 4 quarts of cookies and cream ice cream.  After you have checked out the website, solve the problem using pictures and words.

 

  1. Draw how many quarts you bought. 
  2. Divide the quarts and label them with the fractions you made.
  3. Oh no! The only ice cream scoop you can find is 1/8 of a quart.  Create and label equivalent fractions to show how many scoops each person should receive.
  4. Describe in a complete sentence what you did to divide them equally.

 

 

Part 4: The Cake!

It just wouldn’t be a party without cake!  Don’t worry, you ordered the cake from the bakery last week.  Uh-oh!  They just called and said they delivered your cake to someone else.  What are you going to do? 

 

No bakery can make your cake by this afternoon, but you can!  You go to the store to buy boxes of cake mix.  Each box of cake mix will feed 9 people.  How many boxes of cake mix will you need? ______

 

As you read the directions on the back of the box, you realize that you need to purchase the rest of the ingredients.  Each box asks for 1 egg, ¼ cup of oil, and ½ cup of water. 

 

How much of each will you need? (Remember to write the fraction properly! You needed more than one box of cake mix to feed everyone!)

Your cake came out beautifully! Now you have to cut it into equal pieces.  Remember how many people you need to feed.  Pretend that this rectangle is the cake and show how you would cut it.  Label each piece with the proper fraction.
